It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Leslie Gerald Van Hussen. Leslie
passed away comfortably and peacefully at home in Winnipeg on June 2, 2024 with family
by his side.
He is predeceased by his father Gerald, mother Elizabeth (Sklepowich), sister Geraldine
Steele and brother in law Walter Pich.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife and rock Gladys of 32 years. Sisters Lynda May and
Dale, brother Gordon(Rilda). His Children Lisa (Mike), Alan (Ricki), Angie, bonus children
Jason (Tara) and Lisa (Travis). Grandchildren Melissa (Landon), Riley, Jenna, Ainsley,
Graham, Dillon, Brenton(Michelle), Soulen, Brendon, Liam, Ewan, Kaylen
(Cole), Keaton, Sadie, and great grandson Maverick. In addition to many nieces and
nephews and countless number of honorary family members and friends. Leslie was so
proud of his children and grandchildren. They were the apple of his eye.
Leslie was born at St Boniface hospital in Winnipeg. He was the third child of five for Gerald
and Elizabeth. The family spent summers at their farm house in Erinview/Teulon. Dad had
many great memories and stories he told about times in Erinview. So it is fitting that he be
laid to rest with his parents and his sister.
Leslie worked in the airline industry for thirty three years. Working with Pacific Western,
Calm Air by the DEW Line, Canadian Airlines and joining Air Canada for the final twenty-five.
For the twenty-three years of his retirement he had the chance to do the things in life he
loved the most. He moved to the cabin that he built at Lake Manitoba Narrows and became
a full time outdoorsman. He fought the flood of 2011 by sandbagging and pumping water to
save properties at the Narrows. Dad loved hunting and fishing and taking groups of people
on guided hunting trips up north. He enjoyed family time at the cabin most of all, and he
always had his to do list at hand. When he wasn’t tinkering at the cabin he was two stepping
the night away with Gladys at countless functions.
Dad was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2017. He fought the fight, brave and strong for
7 years. Many thanks to the Palliative Care team who helped us so much to keep dad
comfortable and at home. Special thanks to Cancer Care, Dr Kotb and Dr.Gingerich for their
amazing help in extending dads life by 7 precious years. Your support and compassion was
so appreciated.
We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Gladys for her unwavering compassion and
dedication in caring for our father. Her kindness and selflessness brought comfort and
peace. Your exceptional care and loving presence made an immeasurable difference in our
fathers life and ours.
Cremation has taken place, and a private celebration and interment in Erinview will be held
at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba.
