Mervyn Alexander Obituary
Mervyn Wayne Alexander passed away peacefully on October 25, 2024, from emphysema in the Neepawa hospital. Mervyn, or Merv as he was known to friends and family, fought the debilitating disease with all his strength and courage during the summer of 2024.
Merv was born in Neepawa on July 31, 1954, the second son of David Daryl Alexander and Muriel Jean Alexander. Dave was an auto mechanic that initially worked at the North Star garage, and later at McDougall’s. Jean was trained as a school teacher and had taught at the schoolhouse now relocated to Riverbend Park in Neepawa.
The family moved to The Pas, Manitoba, where Merv spent most of his childhood and early teen years. His parents, uncles (Bob, Murray, Daune), and aunt (Hazel) predeceased him. He is survived by his loving brother Ron, (Jeanine) nephew Mike (Lisa, grandnieces Arden Rose and Carys Victoria) nieces Dayna, Melanie (Joseph), and his uncle Raymond (Debbie). The family wishes to acknowledge and express their thanks and appreciation to Lisa, Troy, and Scott for their visits and many kindnesses to Merv during his hospitalization. Merv was often heard to say ‘Oh, I know them…they are a friend of mine’ and so, thank you all of you!
Mervyn took on post secondary education at universities across the prairies and graduated with an accounting degree at Brandon University. He was a skilled swimmer, starting with lessons in the Whitemud River at Riverbend Park, he went on to be a lifeguard. He excelled in curling. He competed in the high school and men’s leagues in The Pas, and when he returned to Neepawa, skipped a team in the men’s league. In his youth he took pleasure in motorcycle riding and returned to that recently, when he purchased a Harley to enjoy leisurely rides through the landscapes he had known throughout his childhood. The Jets were “his hockey team”, and he watched his last Jets game on October 22, a 3-2 win!
Merv dedicated many years to the care of his mother. His care allowed her to stay in the Neepawa home she loved until she was 95. He was then a faithful visitor when she finally moved to Country Meadows, where he continued tending to her needs.
Every since childhood, Merv loved dogs;the family’s dogs were his beloved and cherished companions. The last dog in the household was Nikki. Merv shared her awesomeness with his mother. Nikki was a beautiful golden retriever that brought them both many moments of joy.
The family will hold a private internment service at the Neepawa cemetery at a time to be determined.
