Betty, Wife, Mother, Nana, Great Nana and Sister slipped away quietly on April 29, 2024. She is lovingly remembered by her husband Bob, her daughter Bev and husband Dale, their children Daniel and wife Ellie, Chantel and husband Andrew. Mom was incredibly proud of her two red haired Grandchildren. She marveled at what they accomplished in life and was very awed by the people that they become. She greatly loved her Great Grandchildren Devin, Elah, Breanna and Linden and would repeat all the stories about them to anyone who would listen. Mom has 2 sisters, Marge and Brenda (Danny) and their families. And even up to the end still complained about being a middle child, even though Brenda was born 10 ½ years after her.
Betty was born in Emerson, MB to Hilda (Pohl) and Emil Walters and lived her early life out on a small farm on the flats. She always said that it was the land God forgot about, it was also the reason she hated milk so much. Just the memory of the smell of milk in barn made her shiver. She was a telephone operator in Morris when she met my Dad, and they got married May 9th, 1957. They lived for 2 years in Portage and settled in Morris for most of their lives. Mom and Dad purchased the drug store from Jos March in 1972 and eventually built our new store in 1978. They sold the store in January 1995 to retire and join us in Alberta, where they stayed for 13 years. Eventually they moved back to Winnipeg so they could be closer to the majority of the family.
Although the last couple of years were a bit of a challenge for Mom, she said at the end she was happy how her life turned out. We also want to give a huge thank you to the kind and caring staff on the 3rd floor at Concordia Hospital. Your compassion at a very difficult time was greatly appreciated. According to her wishes she never wanted a funeral, but instead a call or visit to my Dad would be wonderful. Please message me if you need Dad’s address.
In lieu of flowers or memorial money I want to ask this of you, the world is not very kind to older people so do something nice for a senior. Drop some flowers off at a care home, pay for a seniors groceries next time you are in line or buy someone a cup of coffee. Do it in her memory with kindness and a smile, and maybe wear something red, as that was her favorite colour.
Love Your Daughter, Bev
“I am at peace, my soul’s at rest
There is no need for tears
For with your love, I was so blessed
For all those many years.”
