Robert Leroy Berry Obituary
Robert Leroy Berry
It is with sadness and a great sense of loss that we announce the passing of Robert Leroy Berry on Sunday, June 30, 2024 at the age of 84 years.
Leroy was born to Maurice and Evelyn Berry on July 10, 1939 in Lincoln County, Ontario. The family moved to farm at Quill Lake, Saskatchewan but moved back to Ontario in 1946. Leroy was actively involved in farming at an early age helping his dad, looking after pigs, chickens and dairy cattle, and growing various crops and vegetables. In 1952, Leroy came back to Saskatchewan with his parents to the farm on Highway 8 north of Carievale, Saskatchewan. In 1953, Leroy finished grade 8 at Ingoldsby School and started farming full time with his father, growing cereal crops and raising polled Hereford cattle. From the beginning, he was dedicated to family and to farming.
In June 1964, at Carlyle Lake (White Bear Lake), Leroy met Jennifer Wallace Bradley – a nurse from South Africa that had just started working at the Gainsborough Hospital. By September, they were engaged and were married January 9th, 1965. In the following years, Leroy and Jennifer were blessed with five children.
Leroy was very involved in the livestock industry. In 1967, Leroy started travelling to Europe to select and import Simmental cattle into Canada. He served on the SK Stockgrowers and the SK Simmental Associations. In 1972, he was elected President of the Canadian Simmental Association travelling extensively throughout Europe. He was also a founding member of the World Simmental Association. In 1971, Leroy was elected to the first Board of Directors of the Canadian Western Agribition and was president from 1976 to 1978 when the grand opening was held with Prince Philip in attendance. He also served as the Canadian representative for the World Simmental Federation. His Stetsons and cowboy boots were a familiar sight. In 1988, he was awarded the Saskatchewan Livestock Honor Scroll in recognition of his contributions.
Through this all, he continued to grain farm and be actively involved in federal politics, the Carievale United Church and other various organizations and boards.
Even when Leroy was actively farming and volunteering he always made time for family and friends. Their house was often full of visiting relatives and friends with numerous campers in the yard. During the cooler months, he enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling and later on in his life enjoyed taking his fishing boat out. Leroy was an avid reader of history and politics and shared his love of learning with all his children and grandchildren. He liked his quiet times with Jennifer though, and many evenings were spent reading and listening to classical music (with a little Statler Brothers thrown in). In between farming, cattle and volunteering, Leroy loved to take the family travelling throughout the US and Canada, packing up the family of 7 in the station wagon or van.
Once the children were grown, Leroy and Jennifer continued to travel around the world. Leroy was grateful to pass on the love of farming to a son and grandsons to take over the family business. He always made sure to let all his children and grandchildren know how proud he was of them.
His was a life well lived and well loved. The memories of Leroy and Jennifer holding hands as they sat or walked will stay with us all. We love you Dad.
Leroy was predeceased by his wife of 57 years Jennifer, his parents Maurice and Evelyn Berry, his sisters Muriel, Leone, and Helen, and his brothers William (Bill) and James. Leroy is survived, and will be most lovingly remembered, by his children Catherine, Maurice (Carmen), Bryce (Evette), Julia (Jeff), and Mark (Kyrie). His grandchildren will greatly miss him and will cherish the time they spent together – Christina, William, Brenna, Simon, Mitchell, Raylynne, Davin and Autumn. Leroy will also be remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the staff at Carnduff Sunset Haven for the loving care and support they provided. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Sunset Haven, care of Border-Line Housing, “New Kitchen Fund”, Box 250, Carnduff, SK S0C 0S0.
A family service for Leroy will take place at a later date.
