It is with heavy hearts the family of Joe McCabe announce his passing on November 30th at the age of 92. Joe passed away peacefully at Whisperwood Villa with loved ones by his side. He was from Charlottetown and originally from Stanhope. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Miriam McCabe (nee MacIsaac) and his 5 children Jerry (Anita) Charlottetown, Maureen (Randy) Yellowknife, NWT, Anne McCabe-Cairns (Mike) Charlottetown, Lori Matheson (George) Hopefield, and Clare – Ottawa, On. Also survived by his 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, sister Clare (Jack Weatherbie – dec), brother-in-law Hubert (Kathleen – dec) and wife Mae, sister-in-law Vera (Hubert Gallant – dec) and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Tom and Gertrude (MacAulay), sisters Mary (Ignatius Murphy – dec), Marion (Reg MacDonald- dec), Kathleen (Maurice Creed – dec), Agatha (Bill Whelan – dec), Caroline (Courtney MacDonald – dec), Sister Laura and Anita (Fred Whelan – dec), brothers-in-law Allie MacIsaac (Eleanor – dec), Joseph MacIsaac (Peggy – dec), and infant granddaughter Hillary.
Joe was a man of great faith and a Charter Member of the Knights of Columbus, St Pius X Parish. He loved his family beyond measure and enjoyed his years of membership/volunteering with the Stanhope Historical Society and the Benevolent Irish Society (BIS) where he loved the Ceilidhs and the old time fiddle tunes as well as the chats with people from the Island and from away. Joe had a great gift for conversation, a quick wit, a countless number of clever sayings and was proud of his Irish heritage.
He retired from the Liquor Control Commission in 1991 after 35 years of service. Joe enjoyed his retirement with Miriam whether spending time at their cottage in Stanhope, travelling to various destinations or savouring time with family. He always took interest in the lives of his children and grandchildren and was so proud of each of their achievements. His was a life well lived as he contributed to his church and his community, loved and was loved – always putting family first. He had integrity in all that he did.
The family would like to thank the staff of Whisperwood Villa, where Joe lived for the last year of his life, for their compassionate care and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St Pius X Society of St Vincent de Paul. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Hillsboro Funeral Home where the visiting hours will be held on Sunday, December 3rd from 2-5pm.
