Hans Gabriel HERLITZ Obituary
Hans Gabriel Herlitz, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2024, in Victoria, BC, Canada. He was born on February 11, 1936, in Jönköping, Sweden, and leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and remarkable achievements.
Hans was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Eva, and a caring father to his children, Lars, Sten, and Anna. He was also a cherished brother to Claes and Marie-Louise and his late brother Nils.
As an engineer with degrees in Economics and Mining/Metallurgical Engineering, Hans had a passion for his work that took him all over the world. He was a dedicated and accomplished professional, serving as Manager of the Engineering Departments for SKF Steel and Ovako Steel in several countries, including Sweden, the Netherlands, and the USA. His expertise was also sought after as a Consultant for the steel industry to the European Union in Brussels, Belgium. His contributions to the industry were invaluable and left a lasting impact.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Hans was a man of many passions. He had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed activities such as hiking, skiing, photography, ice skating, playing ice hockey, hunting moose, and riding his motorcycle well into his sixties. He was always curious and was interested in science and new technologies. He was also a wine connoisseur, an avid fan of NHL hockey and loved classical music. Hans and Eva shared a love for long daily walks, a cherished ritual that allowed them to appreciate the beauty of nature together, including their passion for spotting bald eagles and other birds and wildlife.
Eva and Hans lived with their children in Hällefors and Hofors, Sweden, where they made many cherished memories with friends, and they were grateful for the warmth and support they received from their surroundings. In 2016, Hans and Eva made the decision to move to Sidney, BC, Canada, to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Hans will be remembered for his honesty, kindness, earnestness, wisdom, and unwavering love for his family. His presence brought a sense of comfort and security to those around him, and his legacy will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to know him.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Royal Jubilee Hospital medical team for their compassionate care and support during Hans’s final days. They would also like to thank the Amica Jubilee House Staff for their dedication to providing comfort and care to Hans.
Hans Gabriel Herlitz will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones, and his spirit will continue to shine brightly in the lives of those he touched. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love and gratitude of those who cherished him.
