Born on June 1st, 1951 in Dublin, Ireland.
Passed away October 15th, 2024.
Taken too soon by a short intense battle with cancer.
Predeceased by parents Joseph and Agnes Doody.
Lovingly remembered by brother Gerard(Jane), sisters Anne Marie(Fred), Monica(Ken), several nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and many friends.
Don immigrated to Canada at the age of 2 with his parents and 1 year old brother Gerard. He grew up in Vancouver and graduated from Kitsilano High School in 1969. That summer he started his love of travelling by hitchhiking across North America. All these years later he still has the Woodstock poster “that started it all..” His love of ’60’s/’70’s classic rock never waivered. Cranked-up—- “Get your motor runnin’ Head out on the highway”…… and he did on his chopper with psychedelic painted gas tank and matching helmet.
His first vintage car was a 1954 Chev. Bel-Air, then came a convertible version, followed by many vehicles over the years. In the early ’70’s Don hitchhiked all over Europe and South Asia for a year. Don became a Heavy Duty Mechanic. After working and saving he proudly purchased his first home on West 10th Avenue in Vancouver. He outgrew the house and property then moved to Langley where he started his own business —- repairing, rebuilding and restoring vintage motorbikes. There he developed his love for all things Indian Motorcycles. He was co-founder and president of the Canadian “Laughing Indian Riders” Club. For decades he wrote and published the club’s newsletters. Don participated in many world wide vintage motorbike Rides/Rallies over the years, making many friends along the way.
For the past 25 years he called Pender Island his home. He continued his motorcycle business and was involved with the Pender Highlanders’ Annual Show ‘n Shine car show. The vintage motorcycle community has lost a very knowledgeable and skilled craftsman and friend.
Thank you to Don’s friends who cared for him.
Burial at Pender Island Public Cemetery.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Pender Island in the summer of 2025.
