Obituary for Scott James Hussey
July 16, 1961 – September 17, 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Scott James Hussey on September 17, 2023. A loving husband, father, friend, uncle and brother passed away at the age of 62.
Scott will be dearly missed by his loving wife Michelle; daughter’s Danielle (Cole), Jessica and son Brent, his brothers; Mark (Diane) and Rod along with many nieces and nephews, family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Glen and Norma Hussey.
A Celebration of Life will be held on October 22, 2023 at 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the Terminal City Club, 837 W Hastings Street, Vancouver, BC, V6C 1B6.
Scott was born on July 16, 1961 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Glen and Norma Hussey. He was the second of 3 boys.
Scott grew up in the Southdale neighborhood of Winnipeg attending Ecole Van Belleghem then on to JH Bruns Collegiate where he graduated from grade 12. He attended University of Manitoba and later Red River College where he studied Drafting.
At a young age Scott’s love of sports became apparent. He could be found playing hockey at the ice rink or road hockey out front of his house, football and skiing. The ski hill in Winnipeg was a good place to learn the basic skills needed to travel to BC to ski with his cousins on the local mountains.
His love for hockey found him coaching at a young age, continuing into his adult years and eventually sharing his love for the game with his son Brent whom he coached for several years. He played on several teams through out his life and most recently Wednesday evenings at his local rink. His daughter Danielle could be found next to him cheering on their favourite teams either on the couch or at the arena.
Scott found a passion in collecting stamps, hockey cards and decals. His brother Mark would often wonder why Scott was getting mail on a regular basis only to realize Scott was sending mail away for his collectables.
Growing up Scott spent his summers at the family cottage on Brereton Lake where he spent his time fishing, boating, swimming and wind surfing. Once the snow fell you would find him out on his snowmobile.
While attending school Scott worked many part time jobs to put money in his pockets. He started his career delivering papers and flyers in his neighborhood then went on to deliver prescriptions by bike for a local drug store. Scott took his lifeguard certification and worked at the family owned Oasis Beach in Winnipeg. When he wasn’t on duty he would be at the gate greeting the guests and other jobs around the beach. Once Scott had his driver’s license he worked at Hertz Car Rentals moving and cleaning cars. He later worked for Frontier Toyota and Great Plains Honda where his love of sales began.
A phone call one afternoon from his best friend had him move to Edmonton, Alberta where Scott became a successful salesman for Lion Business Machines selling Canon photocopiers. He went on to work for IKON Office Solutions, Grand & Toy, Spence Diamonds, Xerox and Mills Office Productivity as Vice President of Sales with each company. Scott had confirmed his retirement date for January 31, 2024 and was looking forward to spreading his knowledge providing sales training and setting his own hours.
Scott’s love of travel and adventure had him visit Australia 3 times and was headed off for the 4th when in the Spring of 1988 Scott met the love of his life, Michelle. He cancelled his trip and has not left her side since. They married on September 29, 1990 and were just shy of celebrating their 33rd wedding anniversary in September of 2023. Scott was the proud father of 3 amazing children. Danielle born in April 1993, followed by Brent in October 1994 and Jessica in August 1996. Scott had a deep love for his family and never missed an event his children were participating in or an opportunity to spend time with them. He was their biggest cheerleader. He instilled in his children to play hard but work harder, always show up, never be late, save your money and follow your passions.
Scott’s career provided his family the opportunity to make a home and life long friendships in Edmonton, Saskatoon, Lloydminster, Sherwood Park and where they now call home, North Vancouver.
Some of Scott’s interests he will be remembered for were his love of music, traveling, sports, puzzles, boating, magic, bad dad jokes and the opportunity to scare you when you least expected it. Scott’s singing, guitar and piano playing filled his home at all hours. He shared his love of music with many family and friends with jam sessions and sing alongs, always taking requests for your favorite song.
He loved travelling with his wife, family and friends. Some of the places they explored were many US and Canadian cities, Mexico, Raratonga, Australia, Tahiti and Bora Bora. He loved the planning and anticipation of the trip as much as arriving at his destination.
On August 25, 2013 Scott competed in his first Ironman in Penticton, BC. The sport was a perfect fit as it combined his love of swimming, cycling, running and meeting new people. He was training for the Whistler 70.3 on July 28, 2019 when in May of 2019 he suffered a heart attack. This slowed him down temporarily and to occupy his mind and time during his recovery he found his love of completing 1000 piece puzzles of which he did many over the years following. Once fully recovered he got back out there and shared the love of the sport with his daughter Jessica.
The ocean held a special place in Scott’s heart. He would never miss a chance to take a dip in the water and what better way to do so was out on his boat with his family and friends. On a hot summer’s day you would find Scott up Indian Arm rafting up with his cousins’ or cruising over to Gambier Island to spend time with friends to do a little fishing, swimming and relaxing.
Should you sit still long enough Scott would have a deck of cards out showing you his latest magic trick and never revealing the magic behind it. While you sat there trying to figure it out he would throw one of his jokes at you. “A horse walks into a bar and the bartender says why the long face.” Another favorite, “A giraffe walks into the bar and says highballs are on me.”
A favorite pastime was hiding around the corner waiting for you to walk into the room. He got us all many times. We enjoyed repaying the scare.
Scott loved people. Scott always had time for everyone whether you were a life long friend or someone he just met. He would always take the time to strike up a conversation and ask how you were doing. He was happiest surrounded by people and loved hosting a gathering be it work related or in his home, never missing the opportunity to bring people together.
We love you to the moon and back and we miss you as much. You will be forever in our hearts.
