Obituary
Obituary for George Wah Cheung Chui
October 2, 1924 – November 10, 2024
Mr. George Wah Cheung Chui was born in 1924 in Shiqi, Zhongshan County, Guangdong Province, China. He had one older sister and two younger brothers. In his youth, he moved to Macau, where he worked in the accounting department of the Central Hotel, one of the most famous hotels in the city at the time. A few years later while attending Mandarin language class, he met a young lady named Lee King Quon, who he later married in 1948 and became his lifelong companion for 75 years. They have one son and four daughters: Lyman, Lucille, Shirley, Judy and May.
In the early 1960s, the family moved to Hong Kong, and in 1969, they immigrated to North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada, where George and his wife operated “New World Cafe”, a family restaurant, and began his second career in the restaurant business. He worked diligently, took pride in making the best “Hamburger Deluxe and French Fries with his famous beef gravy” in town.
He also enjoyed the finest china, especially the Royal Albert tea pots and tea cups.He had a beautiful penmanship and enjoyed Chinese calligraphy in his spare time. He loved higher education and wished he had the opportunity to attend school while he was young. He encouraged his children and grandchildren to acquire higher education and was proud and happy for their achievements, however big or small.
In 1985, George retired and moved to Vancouver, where he lived happily with his children and their families, as well as his 17 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In his later years he was mellow; as well as known for being a gentle person by those around him. Even approaching and reaching 100 years old, George still managed to surprise those around him by making deep meaningful comments unexpectedly!
In early 2024, he and his wife moved into the Villa Cathay Care Home in Vancouver, where they spent their last years in peaceful companionship. In early November 2024, a month after his 100th birthday, George was admitted to the St. Paul’s Hospital. On the morning of November 10th, surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and with their silent blessings, he peacefully passed away, completing his long and full life.
George’s guiding life principle, reflecting the Doctrine of the Mean, was “Adapt to circumstances and remain at peace.” This philosophy remains a valuable lesson for his family.
