Gloria Lynn Healy, born November 14, 1941, to Len and Gen Healy (Gabrielson), passed away quietly in her husband Don’s arms on the evening of October 26, 2024, after a period of ill health.
Gloria was born in Pouce Coupe, BC, where her dad worked as a farmer. Soon after her birth, the family relocated to the Enderby/Armstrong area, where Gloria graduated from high school. After a year of working at a bank in Vernon, she went into an indentured nursing program at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, B.C., where she graduated from in 1963. She began her career at Vernon Hospital. Shortly after joining the nursing staff in Vernon, the Hospital sent Gloria to McGill University in Montreal, where she completed the first year of a two-year degree nursing program. She later moved to Penticton, where she worked for seven years and was very proud of the fact that she was, at the time, the youngest Director of Nursing in the Province of British Columbia. After leaving Penticton, Gloria worked at various jobs, such as a nurse at Woodwards, to owning her own curio shop in West Vancouver, and working at UBC as a Nursing Supervisor.
She moved to Squamish in 1979 and became the Director Nursing at Squamish General Hospital. After two years as Director of Nursing she expanded her horizons once again, taking a Real Estate Salesperson course and sold real estate in Squamish for four years. She met husband Don in 1983 and they moved in together in September of that year (poor Gloria!) Gloria re-applied for the Director of Nursing position at Squamish General Hospital and started working there again in September of 1985. She was the Director of Nursing during the new build of the Squamish Hospital and worked there in the capacity of Director of Nursing and later Health Care Coordinator for Squamish/Whistler/Pemberton. Gloria retired from that position in July of 2002. Gloria was extremely proud of her profession and all health care professionals
In retirement, Gloria got involved with the Squamish Hospice Society to revamp the Hospice program in Squamish. The Squamish Hospice Society was very near and dear to Gloria for many years and she served as President of the Hospice Society for a number of years.
In 1991, Don and Gloria, having had some exposure to boating, purchased Don’s parents converted fishing boat (Loom) and began cruising the British Columbia coast with Don’s Mom and Dad. In all, Don and Gloria spent 18 years cruising the coast on Loom with his parents on their boat Bout Time.
Bout Time is still in the family and Gloria and Don were hoping to do more cruising together, but she will have one more boat ride with her husband as her request was to have her ashes spread on the water that she loved so much. When Gloria was working, they would take Loom out every second weekend to enjoy the water and you could see her stress melt away as she left the Squamish Harbour.
Gloria was predeceased by her parents, brother Gordon Healy, sister Lorraine McClelland, and nephew Jon. She is survived by her husband, Don of 41 years, son Donald (Tracey), son Robin (Melissa), grandchildren Odin, Emma, Ethan, Milla, Helo, and Ivy and nephews Greg Healy and Marc Healy (Kris).
Gloria will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched with her caring, selfless and empathetic ways. A celebration of life for Gloria will take place on Saturday, November 30th, 2024 at 11 AM at Squamish Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, Gloria’s request was to donate generously to the Squamish Hospice Society.
