Martina Douglas Obituary
Tina was born in Vernon in 1956 and moved with her family to Notch Hill in 1960. She completed all of her schooling in the Shuswap, starting Grade 1 in the historic one room Notch Hill School, and helped on the family farm throughout her childhood. In 1975, she left to attend Olds College, obtaining a diploma in Animal Health Technology that led to a 38-year career in the veterinary profession. Life was busy with her career, her extended family, and raising her daughter, Lisa, in Sicamous, but Tina always had time to volunteer. She spent many years with the Sicamous Figure Skating Club, the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival, and the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life. Her career was her passion and she also volunteered for more than 35 years with the BC Veterinary Technologists Association, and at the national level with the Registered Veterinary Technologists and Technicians of Canada.
Tina was able to retire early and she and her spouse, Dave, made many European motorbike tours, enjoying the mountain backroads of most of the northern Mediterranean countries. They were able to see some amazing wonders of the world including Angkor Wat, the Terra Cotta Warriors, the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu, the Galapagos, and an African Safari. They would return home and then head south to their place in Mesa, Arizona for the winter to escape the snow and cold in the Shuswap. The world changed in 2020, both globally and on a personal level – cancer kept them close to home, so Tina enjoyed the views, garden, and wildlife their new home in Vernon offered.
Tina passed away peacefully with friends and family by her side on May 1, 2024. She is survived by her spouse, David Douglas, daughter Lisa Douglas (Andrew Franklin), siblings Anne Doidge, Adrian Romyn (Marianne Romyn), John Romyn (Barb Roberts), Lola Cochrane (Gary Cochrane), numerous nieces and nephews, and the Hickman and Munro families. She was predeceased by her first husband, George Douglas, her parents, Adrian and Margaret Romyn, and her brother Jack Romyn.
A celebration of life will be held at Bowers Funeral Home in Salmon Arm on Saturday, May 4th at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Tina Douglas Veterinary Technology Memorial Fund at Thompson Rivers University, which will provide a bursary for veterinary technology students who volunteer in service of their peers, the animals they treat, and the veterinary profession.
