The Vail family wishes to announce the death of Kenneth James Vail (Sparky). Husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, Uncle, Brother in-law on September 2, 2024 at 10:25 am at the age of 84.
Born in Schumacher, Ontario October 7, 1939. Ken lived a full and vibrant life and touched the lives of so many throughout the years.
Ken started working at a young age in the gold mines of Schumacher Ontario. He relocated his young family to Kapuskasing, ON in 1960 in order to work at the Spruce Falls Pulp and Paper Company and to play hockey for the Kapuskasing GM’s. Ken aspired to become a fire fighter at a young age as a child. His aspirations became fruitful at a young age and worked for 25 years with the Kapuskasing Fire Department and rescue team. He was devoted to his career.
Ken was an avid hockey player, baseball player and referee for years. He followed his father’s footsteps. It has been said over the many years that he was one of the best referees in Northern Ontario. He played hockey for the Timmins and Schumacher flyers at the age of 17. Ken was recruited to play softball for the international hotel in Sudbury. He was a great player and could play any position, however; his favourite was shortstop and of course had the usual superstitions that baseball is so famous for. Dad always stepped on and off the third base before going to his position.
Ken leaves behind his wife Jo-Anne Vail (Cowden) of 67 years. His daughter Martha Lee (Chris) of Qualicum Beach BC, sons Michael of Victoria, Jeffrey (Cara) of Halifax NS.
Grandchildren Natalie Shepherd (Bobby) Okemos MI, Michael Riopel of Kapuskasing ON, Katie & Ben Vail Kelowna BC, Coral Vail (Nick) Vaughan ON.
Great grandchildren, Chelsea & Connor Kapuskasing ON, Hunter, Wyatt & Isabelle (Izzy) Okemos, MI, Family members Christina Townson, Terry (Connie) Oshawa ON, George Vail (Sally) Oshawa ON, Melville Vail Oshawa, ON, Eric (Karen) Woodstock, ON, Patricia Vail (Al) Midland MI, Jackie (Bruce) Qualicum beach BC , Marge Sudbury, ON. Many nieces, nephews and Ace.
Ken was predeceased by his son Mark Kenneth, his grandson Cameron Vail, his youngest brother Teddy Vail, his parents Sparky (Kenneth) & mother Gertrude Vail (Gert), nephew Gordon Vail, in-laws Harry & Martha Cowden, Carl & Olga Cowden, Jean & Joe Iannarelli, Alice & Donald Sutherland, and lastly deceased pets Zeus and Bogey.
The family would like to thank Doctor Hunter, the Oceanside Hospice at Trillium Lodge & Palliative Care.
Celebration of life will be at a later date.
