Obituary
Verla was born in Salmon Arm, B.C., the youngest of ten children to William and Josephine Bellamy. She passed away at Penticton Regional Hospital. She was predeceased by her parents, six sisters and three brothers, husbands Alfred MacDonald, Harley Andrew (1976), and Alex McClynch (1998). Survived by step granddaughter Deborah Andrew-McQuarrie (Keith) and their son Aidan; stepdaughters Cheryl (Peter) Lee and Sandra Wilkins; cousin Evonne Skands and many nieces and nephews.
In 1942 Verla moved with her parents to Trail during WWII where her father was with Tadanac Police guarding the smelter. She graduated from Trail Business College as a secretary and worked for CM & S company and later worked as a legal secretary.
Verla loved the Okanagan and resided in Penticton since 1970, working as secretary for City of Penticton. She married Harley Andrew, city clerk in 1963. She then was employed at the school board office and later at Pen-Hi retiring in 1973. She and Harley were very active in the community with square dancing and figure skating – judging for thirty years and Judge Chairman for many years.
During her life she was always active in sports – from high school basketball, ladies hockey and football, skating and curling. She especially enjoyed the game of golf.
Verla also loved to cook, sew, read, garden and do crafts.
Verla and Alex met in Nassau while on a cruise and married in 1981. They enjoyed golf, travel, cruising and spent 15 winters in Arizona. It was there she took up painting and continued for 25 years. After Alex passed, she took up bridge lessons in Sandbridge and always said “it was the best card game of all.” She later became the ‘crib wizard’.
Her family were very special to her, and she loved having family gatherings on Penticton beaches with her nieces and nephews.
Verla will be sadly missed by nieces Darlene English (Ray), Barbara Johnson (Mel) and very special friend Kathy Hofmann.
Thanks to the nurses on SP3 and Rehab for their kind, attentive care to Verla. In memoriam donations to Penticton Regional Hospital Foundation.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Everden Rust Funeral Chapel, 1130 Carmi Avenue, Penticton on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 1pm.
