Stephen Brettl Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stephen Brettl on December 6, 2024, at the age of 64. Stephen was preceded by his mother, Mary Brettl; his brother, Robert Brettl; and his brother-in-law, Greg Greenslade. He is survived by his father, Joseph Brettl; his sister, Christina Greenslade; his nieces, Ashleigh Grover and Lisa Merrick; and his great-niece, Olive Merrick.
Stephen was a dedicated chef at the Penticton Hospital for many years, where he began his career as a young man and continued to serve his community until his retirement. He took great pride in his work, not just as a professional but as a deeply caring individual who always put others first. His commitment to excellence and compassion extended beyond the kitchen, as he devoted his life to the well-being of his family and to helping others in need.
A pillar of the Penticton community, Stephen was deeply involved in his church and worked tirelessly to support the less fortunate. His passion for triathlons led him to achieve remarkable feats, including completing four Ironman competitions and an Ultraman event. His involvement in the sport gave him a sense of belonging and camaraderie, forming lifelong friendships that he cherished.
When not training for races, Stephen loved the outdoors—whether it was cycling, camping, or fishing—and enjoyed the peaceful solitude that nature provided. He had a genuine love for life and lived it with unwavering energy, determination, and kindness.
Stephen’s absence leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy of care, community service, and dedication to others will be remembered by family, friends, and all who had the privilege of crossing his path.
A service to celebrate Stephen’s life will be held in the summer, with details to be published in the Western Newspaper. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to local charities or community organizations that Stephen supported such as the food hamper program from the Penticton Catholic church.
