Harold Paul Domi Obituary
Harold danced off to square dance heaven at Westview Place in Penticton on May 2 at
age 89. He was born in the original Haven Hill Hospital in Penticton.
Harold will be remembered for his contribution to the square dance and round dance
community in the Okanagan and elsewhere. He loved old-time waltzes. He cued round
dances and taught, along with his wife Mary Domi (Lamb), round dance lessons to
square dancers for years. He and Mary played leadership roles in planning the annual
Square Dance Jamboree in Penticton at a time when thousands of dancers and families
came for the weeklong event. Square and round dancing on the signature outdoor
plywood floor at King’s Park, dancing in the streets and in the lake. Harold was there.
Archival material has been donated to the Penticton Museum and Archives.
Born in Penticton to parents, Kurt Domi from Germany and Florence Rye from England.
Later, the family moved to Peachland where his parents became fruit growers. His
father was a Master German carpenter, so Harold took on his first job as an apprentice
carpenter with Kenyon and Company. The uncertainty of construction work and with
children born of his first marriage, Harold sought more stable employment at the
Summerland Research Station, employed in various capacities on the grounds and in
the orchards, including irrigation foreman until retirement as a Federal civil servant.
Following the dissolution of his first marriage he met Mary Lamb, who was in a similar
situation. They met one summer evening at a square dance event at Gyro Park in
Penticton. Their common interest in square dancing, camping, and fishing resulted in
them marrying and enjoying a 30-year relationship until she died in 1998. Postil Lake
Lodge was a favourite place for camping and fishing. Harold became proficient at tying
flies for trout fishing. He also enjoyed growing geraniums and Christmas Cacti and kept
a vegetable garden.
Following Mary’s death, Harold met Nettie, also a square dancer without a partner. For
the next 20 years they danced and travelled until that was no longer possible.
The next seven years his home was Southwood Retirement Resort in Penticton. No
more cooking or cleaning. Many new friends. Happy hour! A place with hardwood floors
where he could still dance in his size 13 shoes. Turn on the music and his feet began to
move.
Throughout his life, Harold was ready and willing to lend a helping hand wherever and
whenever he could. From construction projects to setting up tables and chairs for an
event, he would be there to assist. He volunteered in the community in many ways.
Survived by children Barbara, David, Robert and Stephen, and stepsons Jim and
Gerry Lamb, step grandchildren Bruce, Douglas and Carl and three step great
grandchildren and two nieces. Predeceased by his parents and sister Margaret.
Thank you to his many friends, staff and the management at Southwood for the
friendship you shared with him. A special thank you to the nursing staff and doctors at
Penticton Regional Hospital and Westview Place who cared for him in his final weeks.
Thank you to the ambulance paramedics. A special thanks to Dr Louw and Dr Kavosian.
Interment at Peachland Cemetery. Donations In Memory of Harold Domi may be made to
the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation.
