Barbara Robson Obituary
Barbara (McIvor) Robson passed away peacefully at the age of 75, with her family around her, on February 6 2024. She had chosen freedom and ended the cancer she had faced valiantly and with positivity. She was surrounded by her husband of 52 years, Orville Robson; her daughters Nicole Solomon and Kimberly Hulbert; her sons-in-law Marc Solomon and Richard Hulbert and her beloved granddaughter, Kaelynne Solomon. She is loved and survived by her sister Marty McComb (Larry), her sister-in-law Ann Robson and her brother-in-law Robert Robson (Sandy).
Barbara was born in Selkirk, Manitoba to Martina and Colin McIvor. The family of four moved to Calgary Alberta in the early 1950s where close family friends were made and retained over the years. Barbara moved to BC and eventually made her way to Penticton in 1969 where she could spend time with her horse. This is where Orv, stationed there with the RCMP at the time, pulled her over one night for no license plate light. They were married two years later. Barb made homes with Orv, Nicole and Kimberly in Agassiz, Revelstoke, Vanderhoof, Victoria and Summerland and welcomed visits from the many friends and family from across Canada over the decades. She was known for her kindness and hospitality – she planned Robson Reunions and hosted weddings and numerous celebrations at their homes all over BC.
Her administrative career as a Public Servant started in 1972 and led to her favourite position in the BC Legislature as the Administrative Assistant to the NDP Minister of Aboriginal Affairs in 1992. She retired from the Okanagan Region of BC Parks in 2002 but she did not slow down. She enjoyed travel-trailer journeys across Canada and the US with Orv, various cruises with friends and family and travelling internationally to Japan, Serbia and Mexico. She was at her granddaughter Kaelynne’s birth in 2007 and for 16 years, Barb (“Nana”) carried the legacy of her dad Colin in being a dedicated and beloved grandparent.
Barb perfected the art of puttering and loved to re-arrange furniture. She re-arranged it to the end, when she set up her recliner to face the lake from her living room, with enough space for her family to surround her in her last few moments. We joked she has a lot of floatin’ around to do given the lives she has touched. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends will miss her and proudly celebrate her influence. She shouldered the last 1.5 years with dignity, positivity and stubbornness. She counted herself very fortunate to have the support of Dr. Venkataraman, Chris and Jen; Dr. Bull; Dr. Baxter; Dr. Bannerman; home care nurse Liza; the professional and caring health care staff at the Penticton Oncology Clinic and many other tireless health workers who helped her and Orv. Her ability to choose her own terms was a gift when life was no longer an option. Please honour her memory by donating to the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation campaign $10 Million Oncology Campaign or to your local Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) support group. In the words of a long-time friend of Barb’s, “…let go of any sadness and know you will go on, and on, forevermore, with the souls that mean the most to you, and the love that you are”.
A Celebration of Life for Barbara will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, May 17 2024 at the Summerland Alliance Church, 14820 North Victoria Road.
