It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nick Hyrchuk—beloved husband, father, and Papa. Nick passed away on August 20th at the age of 85, at his home in Osoyoos, BC, with his family by his side.
Nick was born in St. Paul, Alberta, where he attended high school while holding down three jobs. He furthered his education at SAIT, where he took a meteorology course. Nick then embarked on a 12-year career with Telus before pursuing his entrepreneurial spirit by starting his own manufacturing agents business. He was determined to succeed, and succeed he did.
In 1987, Nick met the love of his life, Carleen, a “cute blonde with two little girls.” Together, they built a wonderful life, not only as best friends but also as great business partners. They often joked that Carleen liked to spend money, and Nick was the one who had to make it.
Over the years, Nick and Carleen owned and operated a hotel in Blackfalds, Alberta. After selling the hotel, they purchased a seven acres waterfront property in Osoyoos, where he developed a strata RV resort and purchased the home they shared for many years. For the past 25 years, Nick enjoyed spending winters in their Phoenix-area home.
Nick’s two daughters, Pamela Thompson (Wyatt) and Jody-Lane Johnson, blessed him with his greatest joy—his grandchildren: Skyler, Abby, Kennedi, Caden, and Peyton. Nick was a proud dad and Papa, teaching his grandchildren the value of hard work. He often said, “If you want a good life, you have to work hard for it!” He was the go-to person for advice, whether work-related or personal, he was a great confidant and his family cherished his guidance.
Another of Nick’s great loves was golf. His “men’s group” was a significant part of his life, and Tuesday was sacred—no doctor’s appointments, legal meetings, or happy hours were allowed, as it was “Men’s Day.” Nick loved making bets with the guys about his age and often surprised them by shooting under his age, earning himself a few dollars.
Nick is survived by his sister, Shirley Kvill (Arnold) of Elk Point, Alberta, and two nieces, Roberta and Jody, in Edmonton.
In his final days, Nick instructed Carleen that he wanted to be remembered not for his successes, but for being the “best Papa and Dad.” However, Carleen and his many wonderful friends will also remember him as a true gentleman—generous, kind, and ever so thoughtful. He will be deeply missed.
A celebration of Nick’s life will be held on October 12th, beginning with an 11:00 AM mass at the Catholic Church, where he served alongside Father Peter until two months ago. Lunch and a program will follow at the Osoyoos Golf Course.
