Robert Kooi, 77
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Kooi, aged 77, on September 5, 2024, in Nanaimo, BC, Canada, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Robert was born on October 22, 1946, in Bussum, Netherlands. After proudly serving in the army in Holland, Robert moved to Canada in 1970, where he built a wonderful life and touched many hearts.
Robert was a devoted husband to Julia and loving father to Brian and Cyndee, and a loving bonus father to Dawn and Larry. His family continued to grow with eight cherished grandchildren: Jada, Kaelan, Jasper, Kandra, Mazrim, Novelle, Austin, and Aviendha, and one great-granddaughter, Amira, who brought him immense pride and joy. His family was his greatest treasure, and he was a constant source of love, guidance, and wisdom to all who knew him.
Robert loved spending time in his garden, tending to his plants and flowers, and enjoying nature. He also had a deep passion for salmon fishing, particularly on the west coast of Vancouver Island at Poets Nook, where he found peace. Julia was always by his side, sharing in these passions, making their adventures even more meaningful.
In addition to fishing, Robert was an avid fan of Formula One racing and never missed the excitement of watching the races. He was also a dedicated supporter of Manchester United, proudly cheering for his football club through every season.
Proud of his Dutch heritage, Robert embodied warmth, generosity, and a deep sense of family. His presence in the lives of his loved ones was a true blessing, and his memory will be forever cherished.
He is survived by his wife Julia, his children, bonus children, grandchildren, great-granddaughter, and his siblings Elly, Marjo (Renée), Jack (Hans), and Paul, all of whom reside in the Netherlands. He will also be missed by his extended family and many friends in both Canada and Holland. His impact on their lives will remain lasting and profound.
A celebration of Robert’s life will be held on October 6, 2024, at the 256 Legion – 1630 East Wellington Rd, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, where family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and love.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in Robert’s honor.
