Joanne Cathrea Obituary
It is with deep sorrow we share that on January 26, 2024, Joanne Elizabeth Cathrea (nee Cotton), of Courteney BC, passed away peacefully at the age of 77 years old.
Joanne was born in Victoria, BC. Joanne was predeceased by both of her parents Grace Cotton, Doug Cotton and step-mother Lorainne Cotton. In 1972 Joanne married the love of her life Jim Cathrea. Jim and Joanne were happily married for 51.5 years. In 1977 they welcomed their son Jeff Cathrea, and in 1979 they welcomed their daughter Jamie Panter (nee Cathrea). Joanne was a stay-at-home, devoted mother, hockey/lacrosse mother to her loving children Jeff and Jamie in Nanaimo BC.
While her children were at school Joanne and her friends would get together every Thursday for a group they called “Stitch ‘n’ ” which is where they formed bonds and lasting friendships as they worked on many different projects (cross-stitch, knitting, crocheting, Christmas ornament making, or gossiping). Once Joanne’s husband Jim Cathrea semi-retired from work as an electrician and they had raised their children, they both decided to travel around the United States with their four Yorkshire terriers, Bailey, BJ, Rodney and Zoey. After a couple of years of travelling in their motorhome to different places in Texas, USA they found a love to be snowbirds and started to reside in Brownsville Texas, USA for six months of the year.
In Joanne’s spare time after finally deciding to not travel anymore she took up the hobby of crocheting dog blankets. Joanne would donate the blankets to the SPCA or other animal shelters so that any animal getting adopted would go home with a blanket, or if she happened to hear that you had a dog she was going to give you one to take home even if it was the first time she had met you.
Joanne will be missed by her husband Jim Cathrea, her two children Jeff Cathrea (Cheryl Duval) and Jamie Panter (Todd Panter) She was loved and will never be forgotten by her four granddaughters, Victoria Panter, Soliel Duval, Genavie Duval, Elle Duval along with her dog Zoey, as well as many devoted friends in Canada and USA.
An immediate family only, private memorial/celebration of life will be held at a later date, where her ashes will scattered as per Joanne’s wishes.
May Joanne’s memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be greatly missed.
In lieu of gifts or flowers, the family would ask that you make a donation to your local SPCA/Animal shelter on behalf of Joanne Cathrea.
