Wayne Gordon Smith
Write a Tribute
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, dad, grandpa, uncle, cousin and friend.
He is survived by his loving wife Frances, Stepson Allan McNaughton (Elaine), grandchildren Jordan Kanygin (Melissa), Kaitlyn Morgan (Eric, first great grand boy due in August) and Alyssa McNaughton (Colin Urquhart). His son Elliott (Carmen) Maya and Jackson. Many cousins and his nieces Tamara and Shawna.
He was predeceased by his parents Don/Elsie Smith, his brother Gary, cherished son Darren and brother-in-law Richard Lamey.
Wayne was born at Grace Hospital in Vancouver. He graduated from Burnaby South in 1962. He then enrolled into the Naramata Christian Leadership Training School. After he graduated from the Christian School, he then decided to spread the word of God, with another student, and rode a horse from BC to Saskatchewan, which was a 700-mile horseback trip and this ride took them 25 days. He would always talk about that adventure and say “did I ever tell you the time I rode a horse to Saskatchewan.”
He then applied to Edmonton Police Department and was hired as a police officer. In 1973 he applied to Port Moody Police Department and worked there until his retirement in 2000 as Sergeant. He was also President for the Port Moody Police Service Union for twelve years.
And at one time, he owned Westcoast Marine and then the Sportsman Club in Port Moody.
Throughout Wayne’s life, he was highly active in all sports such as football, hockey, soccer, golf, skiing, running, and mountain biking. In his teen years he was an exceptional baseball player. He was also a soccer and hockey coach.
Wayne and Fran enjoyed many travel adventures to Mexico, Hawaii, cruises, backpacked Greece where they hiked the Gorge on Crete, motorcycle and Rving trips all over USA, and their favourite annual Palm Springs vacation with family and friends. He especially loved family holidays with his grandchildren at Shuswap Lake.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to friends, neighbours, Dave Wynes, Lyall McNaughton and his cousin Barry for their continuous care and support in the last difficult months…also thanks to the Special Care Unit at George Derby Care Home.
Memorial service will be held on June 28th at 1:00 PM at the CA Church (Mariner) 2601 Spuraway Avenue, Coquitlam, B.C. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Parkinson’s or BC Cancer Society.
Wayne…you put up a valiant battle throughout your illness… You will be so missed but you are now at peace ………
