We are saddened to announce the passing of Verna Frances Cousins at the age of 98 on June 20, 2024, at McKenny Creek Hospice in Maple Ridge due to a respiratory illness.
Born near Eldersley, Saskatchewan on July 21, 1925, Verna lived a life marked by resilience, kindness, humor, creativity, generosity, and a straightforward demeanor. Verna was the eleventh of thirteen children born to Leo and Margaret Foster. She grew up on a farm where family, faith, and friendship were central during the Great Depression. Despite modest means, her family flourished with love, respect, gratitude, and a strong work ethic, shaping Verna’s character.
At 17, Verna moved to Vancouver, staying with her sister Nora and husband Ray Kelly, who were raising ten children of their own. She worked as a stenographer during WWII and later married William Gordon Cousins in 1956. They built a home in Coquitlam, raised two sons, and nurtured enduring friendships and community ties. Verna remained devout, active in All Saints Parish and served as a member of the church’s alter committee.
Known for her caring nature, Verna supported her family, enjoyed hobbies like swimming, travelling, baking, board games, and embraced new adventures including Dragon Boat Racing at the age of 77. After retirement, she and Gord moved to Panorama apartments in Maple Ridge, forming cherished bonds with fellow residents.
Preceded in death by Gord in 2011, Verna is survived by her sons Dean (Jennifer) and Wayne (Carmel), granddaughter Holly, sister Terry, and numerous extended family members and friends.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 22561 – 121 Ave, Maple Ridge on Tuesday, July 2 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to Ridge Meadows Hospice Society or Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation would be appreciated. Staffs at both facilities took excellent care of Verna.
Verna’s laughter, storytelling, and zest for life touched many hearts. Please join us to celebrate her life and bid her farewell with love and gratitude.
