Mary Vogel (nee Kerr) passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday August 20, 2024 in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, at the age of 91.
Mary was born in Irvine, Ayrshire in Scotland on July 23, 1933. She was the daughter of John Anderson Kerr and Flora Campbell Kerr (nee Goddard). She had three brothers, Douglas, Billy and Victor, who she helped care for when they were young.
She married her beloved husband Otto Vogel on August 3, 1956 in Vancouver. They were married for almost 55 years before her husband’s passing in 2011 at the age of 83.
Mary was the cherished mother to Gerry Vogel (Cathy), Frank Vogel (Shelley), Robert Vogel (Linda), and Roland Vogel (Rachelle). She is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren who she adored. They brought her great happiness. She was surrounded by people she loved for all of her years and until the very end.
Mary loved to camp in the Summer when her children were younger, enjoying the beauty of British Columbia and the continental USA. Her journeys took her as far away as Europe and Australia, but her favourite vacation spot was Oahu, Hawaii which became a regular destination from 1974 onwards. She loved the sun and warm sand and dipping her toes in the ocean. She frequented the old Kodak Hula Show, the birds of Paradise Park, the ocean life of Sea Life Park, and walks in tropical valleys past beautiful waterfalls.
She spent the vast majority of her adult life and all of her final years in Maple Ridge. She loved the sight of the Golden Ears and the smell of the grass and flowers after a hard rain, or the warm wind during a Summer storm. She enjoyed baking in the sun in the back yard whenever she had the chance (often with the same bamboo matts she had used in Hawaii). She enjoyed feeding the fish and the birds in her yard, and walks through the neighborhood and on the local dike.
She loved flowers and plants and humming birds. She could make beautiful macramé. She made an amazing lemon meringue pie, and candied apples and cream puffs that were unmatched by anyone. She loved to read all of her life, and she shared that love with her family.
She loved to swim at the local pool (despite almost never putting her face in the water) and would enjoy soaking in the hot tub. When she was well into her 80s she started doing weights. She was almost 87 and still pumping iron at the local gym when it closed down due to the pandemic.
But most of all she loved her children. She was a great mother. She was kind and devoted. She could be stubborn but also accommodating. She could sing with the sweetest voice to a young child while she held them or stroked their hair, and often with the softest Scottish accent (which also came out more when she was talking about Scotland or scolding someone). She spoke of two Irish girls who plunked her on a bar when she was young demanding that she sing, but her voice was usually reserved for children not crowds. She was quick to hug. She was quick to smile. Her family was everything to her. And when her children had children of their own, she loved them just as much. As she did when her extended family continued to grow. She will be missed by many people who cared about her.
It was important to her that she be remembered with more happiness than tears, and in a way that reminded everyone how much she loved them, and the many ways that they were all able to share their time with her. She treasured those moments. She wanted others to treasure them as well.
In accordance with Mary’s wishes cremation has taken place, and there will be a celebration of life for family members at a date and time to be fixed. Online condolences may be shared at this site. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation.
The family also wishes to express their many thanks for the kindness and care given by our family doctor of many years, Dr. Martin Milewski.
