Lula is survived by her 4 children Karen, Ryan (Kris), Connie (Mike) and Carol (Darren) ,her grand children Shanda (Darryn), Eric (Amy), Ross, and Scott (Bobbie), Emily (Mark) and Thompson (Annie-Rose), Christopher (Lisa), Allan (Sheila), David (Rae-Anne) and Diana, Amy (Justin) and Julie. Also 13 great grandchildren Alex, Logan, Nathan and Holly, Jaxson, Chloe and Taylor, Henrik and Peter, Eamon, Hayes and Evie, and Penny. Lula is also survived by her sister Vi Emerson and sister-in-law Viola Burkett.
Lula is predeceased by her husband Olav (2013) her parent’s Albert (2001) and Astrid (1999) her in-laws Roy (1971) and Martha (1995) and her son Allan (1972).
Lula was born April 7, 1931 near Erickson, Manitoba in the Rural Municipality of Clanwilliam. She is the oldest daughter of Albert (Grandy) and Astrid (Momo) Skoglund. She married Olav Shellborn on June 24, 1950 and they lived on the farm in Manitoba until 1972. Along with helping raise cattle, horses and crops, she planted large vegetable gardens. Lula enjoyed horseback riding, spending time showing at the country fairs and trail riding with the family. She had fond memories of her mare Bonnie. She recalled how she won money in a draw and Olav suggested she use that to purchase Bonnie, like it “was meant to be”.
In 1972 the family relocated to Maple Ridge. Throughout the years here in BC they made several trips to Manitoba. They hauled apples there and potatoes back to BC. They enjoyed attending weddings, dances and auctions. Lula continued to garden, pick blackberries, preserve fruit, pickle herring, and cook large meals for family events and other occasions. Lula and Olav always had the coffee pot on and were happy to host family, friends and other guests, enjoying the company and memorable conversations. It was not uncommon to visit and find them working on things together; baking, canning and even doing dishes. At Christmas they baked ginger snaps (Momo’s recipe), and dinner always included Lute Fisk with white sauce. Lula and Olav loved spending time at the cabin at Eastgate and having the family visit.
When her husband Olav passed, Lula moved into Greystone Manor where she lived until her passing. She enjoyed many celebrations there including Easter, Mothers Day and Breakfast with Santa buffets. The family have fond memories of Pot Luck Christmas diners in the Country Kitchen. Lula liked to spend time with the family, chatting with the grandchildren and getting to meet the great grandchildren.
Lula loved to knit and often gifted her work to family members. She liked to spend her days doing word search, sudoko and the daily puzzles on her Ipad. She enjoyed reading her emails and looking at the pictures sent by the family of their various adventures. Lula was always happy when someone would show up with Sushi (especially sunomono) or Teen Burgers with Sweet Potato fries or Chicken McNuggets.
A private graveside service will be held. Donations can be made in Mom’s memory to a charity of your choice.
