In memory of John Meyerhoff, who passed away peacefully in his home in Ladner, BC on October 30th.
John was born in Vancouver, the second oldest of six siblings. When he was working at the Province at 14
years old, John accidentally spilled ink on the dress of Barbara (Babs) Devitt. Little did he know he had just
met the love of his life. John and Babs lost touch through high school and after graduation John went to the
shipyards in search of work where he was offered a job as a deckhand. After a few summers working on the ships and in camps in Kildala, John decided to remain in Vancouver to pursue a career in education. It was during this time that John and Babs reconnected and married in 1956. They raised their four children on Athlone St, taking them on road trips and several vacations to Maui over the years.
John loved to share stories from his young adult life and when he watched Jeopardy he could outdo
most of the contestants. In his retirement, John enjoyed bowling and spending time in the garden, and
every Saturday morning he would complete the New York Times crossword in the Vancouver Sun.
In 2012 John and Babs moved to Ladner and after celebrating 56 years of marriage, Babs passed
away suddenly in 2013. John is survived by his four children, Bruce (Viva), Andrew, Dean, and Kate
(Bjorn) and his 11 grandchildren, Halle, Aysha, Daniel, Reece, Riley, Spencer, Meijun, Sean, Fiona,
Sophia and Aiden.
John’s Celebration of Life will be held at the Delta Funeral Home (5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Delta, BC. V4K
1W6) on Tuesday November 7th, 2023 at 1:00pm.
