Write a Tribute
WINTER, ALISTAIR GORDON died in Burnaby, BC at the age of 74. Alistair was born in Pelotas, Brazil. His father, Robert Clive Winter had gone to Brazil in 1938 to work in a canned beef packing plant and met Alistair’s mother Gladys Evelyn Bruce Murray who was 1st generation Argentinian of Scottish descent. He immigrated to Canada with his parents and brothers (Stuart and Ian) when he was around 3 years of age. The family settled in Vancouver, but eventually moved to Penticton where Alistair completed high school. After the death of his mother around age 10, he soon had a new mother Ruth and a sister Beryl Jeffrey.
After high school, Alistair headed back to Vancouver for work and at one time worked for Rogers Sugar factory in the Port of Vancouver. He also worked for Noble Towing out of N. Vancouver as a deckhand doing log boom work. But being young he had a sense of adventure. He went to Ontario for brother Ian’s wedding and had an adventure jumping on trains…remember this is the 70’s. Next he decided to seek out relatives in South America, so with a Spanish dictionary in his hand he hitchhiked south. He lived in Columbia for 2 years teaching business people and young ladies English. Two years later he arrived in Argentina and found his cousins in Mar del Plata, Argentina. After 2 years there, it was a time of political unrest, so he decided to head home.
Adjusting to being back in Canada was difficult, after leading a bohemian lifestyle for 4 years, but he decided to go back to school at UBC. He loved being a student and took 10 years to complete a B.Sc. in Agriculture studying horticulture. He was interested in World food security and participated in many activities that included being the President of the Agricultural Undergraduate Society. During one of the many Aggie dances he met his wife Julie. His summer jobs at this time included putting spray foam insulation in homes (later found to be bad), spraying knapweed and other weeds for the Ministry of Highways and spraying at Massot Nurseries , Richmond.
After graduation he took a job as Production Manager in the newly formed Container division at Specimen Trees in Pitt Meadows for 3 years. In 1986 Alistair and Julie bought their 5 acres in Pitt Meadows. Alistair worked for 1 year at van Vloten Nurseries in Pitt Meadows, before heading back to work at Noble Towing in in North Vancouver and transferred to the company Marine Petrobulk where he had worked since 1991 and continued to work until he suddenly became ill in April with complications of Cancer. He loved working on the ocean and was fascinated with all the activities in the harbour, often taking pictures of different ships and wildlife.
In his spare time Alistair loved to read and had a huge collection of books. He also enjoyed travelling. When he became a devoted Christian he travelled to Turkey twice, Jerusalem and Jordan to experience Christian history. He enjoyed working in the woods on the property making trails to walk the dogs. He was devoted to all the animals that he had over the years. Separating in 2017, after a marriage of over 30 years, the focus of his life became Cuba. Sadly, he recently admitted that his travel days had come to an end with his new cancer diagnosis.
Alistair was predeceased by his parents and brother Stuart Winter (May 2022)
