Shannon MACKEY Obituary
Shannon Lee Mackey
November 2, 1961 to August 23, 2024
It is with heavy hearts the family of Shannon announces his passing on August 23, 2024. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He fought hard, but ultimately succumbed to his illness.
Shannon was born in Viking, Alberta on November 2, 1961. He spent his youth helping on his family’s farm; he was a part of the 4H Club for many years; he played numerous sports, including basketball, hockey, and track&field; and he was always getting into some sort of trouble. In his adulthood, not much changed! Shannon loved cars, to which he had purchased many and crashed a few (in his early years). He worked in the Oil Field, alongside his father and brothers-in-law for many years, before moving out to Nanaimo, BC, in 1988, where he lived the remainder of his life. In Nanaimo, Shannon had all of his 5 children, attended Malaspina College for a Bachelor of Arts in Finance, and later worked as a Financial Advisor. He was a kind man, someone who would always lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Shannon loved the outdoors and prided himself on the work he had done in his backyard – his two-close fur-companions, Duke and Meka, would often assist in these endeavors. In his final months, he had many visits from family and friends, and spent most of his time, happily and contently, with his children and Marla.
Shannon is survived and will be deeply missed by his life partner Marla Mackey, and their 5 children, Chase (Tamara Rooke and their son and Shannon’s first grandson, Weston) Mackey, Steven Arkell, Darren Arkell, Braden (Shay and her daughter Saydie) Mackey and Brianna Mackey: as well as his mom Myrna Mackey, siblings: Sina (Victor) Lindquist, Kris Mackey, Debby (Mario) Watson-Rauseo, Harlen (Gabrielle) Mackey, Kari (Len Turcotte) Mackey, and Jamie (Heidi Schwab) Mackey and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and countless others — too many to name. He is predeceased by his father Melvin Mackey, younger brother Reed Mackey and brother-in-law Daryl Fossum, as well as his in-laws, Albert and Linda Taylor.
The family would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who took the time to call, text, and visit Shannon over the 11 months prior to his passing, he appreciated you all very much. In addition, a huge thank you to Dr. Melissa Gillis and the staff at Lexitor Medical clinic for your care and compassion; Dr. Lakkunarajah at the BC Cancer clinic in Victoria, BC for giving him more time; the Community Palliative care team who helped us navigate this; and last, the Palliative Care Unit at NRGH, we are so grateful to you for taking such good care of him in his final days.
A “Celebration on Life” will take place in Nanaimo, BC on Saturday, September 14th, 2024 at 11am, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 394 Shepherd Ave. Please come celebrate the kind, courageous, and loving man he was, and have some refreshments and snacks after the service. Lastly, the church will be streaming his service on “Facebook Live” for those who are unable to attend in person. Link to follow.
