MARKO, Sean Thomas
May 21, 1995 — June 13, 2024
With broken hearts, we announce the loss of Sean Thomas Marko, who passed away from a tragic accident at his home, on June 13, 2024, at the age of 29.
Sean is survived by his loving family, parents Rob Marko and Dorinda Taylor; sister Kaylee Marko; grandmothers Lucy Marko, Marjorie Mason, and Leslie Taylor; as well as his aunts, uncles, and cousins. Sean was predeceased by his grandfathers Peter Marko Sr., Freeman Mason, and Robert Taylor, and his uncle Peter Marko Jr.
Sean also leaves behind many friends from Burlington, ON where he grew up, and Banff, AB where he lived for over ten years.
Sean was passionate about many things in his life. If he had a true interest in something it was never half-way. He was all in, working for better, faster, higher, and more extreme. Snowboarding was his biggest passion. He would have spent all his time on snow if he could have. In the ‘off-season’, mountain biking and trail building, skateboarding, slacklining, rock climbing, etc. filled his time. Sean was a talented woodworker, turning beautiful bowls on his lathe and creating other wood projects. He also built mountain bike trails with “gnarly” jumps. He often harvested the wood himself with an artist’s eye for interesting grain and burls. He was a dedicated Scrabble player, beating most of us, most of the time. Sean loved pool and snooker, where he also beat most of us, most of the time. He loved foraging for mushrooms and introducing people to edible wild mushrooms. Sean was known for his love of spicy food and for putting Tobasco on practically everything he ate. He always had his Tobasco close to hand.
In his journey through life, Sean’s passion, talent, and kindness touched many people and he was touched by theirs in return. He made many close relationships, made many friends, helped many people, and was helped in turn by many people. Sean struggled with the physical and mental health effects of multiple concussions, as well as a host of other injuries from pushing the limits in his sports. Sean struggled with alcohol use disorder which likely contributed to the fall that took his life.
We respectfully ask everyone to be aware that addictions and mental health issues are of equal importance to physical illness and injury. Keep your family and friends close and encourage anyone struggling to get professional help.
We celebrate and hold dear all the special times we had with Sean. It brings us comfort to know that he was also a part of so many people’s lives. We are overwhelmed by all the support and true kindness that has been shared with us. We are truly grateful. Thanks to all.
Gone way too soon. Remembered and loved forever.
Celebrations of Life will be held in honour of Sean at later dates.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
