Karl Johann Hoeller Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Karl Hoeller. Karl passed away peacefully on January 16, 2024, surrounded by his children and their spouses. He was born in Austria and celebrated his 100th Birthday in October 2023.
Karl was a man of many talents, always re-inventing himself to provide for his family. He left home at the tender age of fourteen to work as a deck hand on the Rhine River barges in Germany. After a brief stint in WWII, Karl courted and married Stefanie. In 1953, along with their first child, Monika, the young family immigrated to Fernie, BC, Canada. As they began their life in their new country, a second daughter, Johanna, was born. Life was hard as new immigrants, but having wandering spirits, Karl and family ventured to the Yukon, where he worked as a miner in the United Keno Hill Mining operations. The first son, Charles was born and life was good, although remote. Seeing the educational needs of his children changing, the family continued their adventures and moved to Revelstoke, BC, where their second son, Andrew, was born. Revelstoke afforded Karl and Stefanie many new opportunities. With his skiing and mountaineering experience, he found employment in snow research at the Rogers Pass; helped in developing the ski school on Mount Revelstoke in the early 1960’s; opened the Heather Hut, which supplied ski equipment to the locals and souvenirs in the off-season to tourists arriving via Greyhound Bus Lines; and learned his carpentry skills building his own home and working in construction at the Mica Dam. North Vancouver and Saltspring Island were next in their adventures, where Karl and Stefanie took up sailing, built two houses, ran a sheep farm, and managed a private fishing lodge on Stewart Island.
Karl and Stefanie spent much time outdoors, sailing, camping, skiing, and travelling to various places in North America and Europe. Karl was most comfortable on the road discovering new places to visit and after his dear Stefanie’s passing in 2005, he travelled alone across Canada in his precious Westphalia travel van. Karl’s love of camping eventually led him to join a group of like-minded individuals, the Spanners (West Kelowna). It was at these outings that he met Sonja, his keen travelling companion. Karl could spend hours recounting his many escapades and experiences to his family and friends. He was a walking, talking atlas!
Karl and Stefanie raised their children to be independent, resourceful, and respectful, with love of family foremost. Karl’s earnest approach to life continues through his offspring and his legacy of re-invention and hard work will continue through generations.
Karl is survived by his children, Monica Wilson (Paul), Johanna Hoeller (Joseph), Charlie Hoeller (Jeanne) and Andrew Hoeller (Nicole). He will be deeply missed by his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, Simon (Daleth), Matthew and Gabriel), Victoria, Thomas (Occean), Daniel (Cassi), Jacob, Ryan (Vanessa, Nathalie), Scott (Silvie), Rocco (Kim),
Rava (Nathan), and Melissa (Nathan).
A Celebration of Karl’s Life is planned for later this year.
