FIKE, Geraldine “Faye”
December 9, 1948 — April 2, 2024
It is with a deep and everlasting love that we announce the loss of Faye Fike, who passed away peacefully on April 2, 2024, at the age of 75.
Faye was predeceased by her parents, Millie and Tom Fairbairn. She has left her devoted husband of 55 years, Stanley Fike; two daughters, Michelle (Al) Wolf and Melanie Moana (Josh Belleville); bonus daughter, Dee (Troy); six grandchildren, Sequoia (Cedar), River, Jayson, Brooke, Harmony, and Cedar; as well as her first great-grandbaby, Poppy, who is on the way.
“My wife Faye was the love of my life, the ground beneath my feet, the joy in my world, and the soulmate of my heart. She spread her kindness, generosity, curiosity, sense of fairness, open-heartedness, and laughter into the world every day, to the benefit of her family, her friends, her community, and the world at large. She was small in stature but larger than life. And we were teammates of the most extraordinary kind.
Faye was astonishingly smart. She devoured thousands of books over her lifetime, excelled at crossword puzzles and trivia, and astutely understood the world around her. She was excellent and engaging company because she knew something about everything.
Faye was raised in Alberta with outdoors-loving parents, and throughout her life, nature was a theme. We camped extensively with our own children, and then our grandchildren in turn. Faye and I created an urban garden oasis at our property in Kamloops, and this garden has been our sanctuary, the place where Faye spent countless hours with her plants, her family, and the songbirds who shared the garden with us.
Our life together was full and active. We lived in four provinces and spent two years in New Zealand early in our marriage. We loved sports and adventure. We have been members of the Kamloops Curling Club for over 39 years. We also played golf, badminton, softball and volleyball together over the decades. And, we travelled often to experience the world and visit our girls and extended family.
Faye was a gifted seamstress, knitter, and craftswoman. She was creative, loved colour, and loved making things for people she cared about. She was proud of the industrious handiwork of women, and she herself could turn her hands to any project. We all have sweaters, socks, blankets, cross-stitch artwork, clothing, home décor items, and hats that she has lovingly and skilfully created for each of us. My puffin sweater holds a particularly sacred meaning for me.
One of Faye’s biggest contributions to the world was her humanitarianism and volunteer work. We were involved with the Kamloops West Rotary Club since 1986, and we travelled to over 20 countries together to contribute to development projects. Faye was a Soroptimist for twenty years, providing support and advocacy for projects within Kamloops. Faye and I have been active with Days for Girls over the last five years, working with our close-knit Kamloops chapter in support of the international foundation. Faye was extremely gratified by this work, which was a testament to her desire to help on global projects in a local capacity. We were active volunteers with the Kamloops Food Bank, and we helped establish and manage the Rotary Community Garden in North Kamloops. She won Rotary International’s “Excellence in Service to Humanity” award and countless other awards and accolades over the years, including the City of Kamloops’s “Volunteer of the Year” award. Her deep legacy of caring and community building will be felt in our cherished city for decades to come.
And, who can celebrate the life of Faye without mentioning her love of life and her infectious laughter? The Faye snort was legendary. She was my best friend, her mother’s best friend, and her daughters’ best friend, partly because she kept us all laughing with her sense of humour and appreciation for the truly zany parts of living. We have cried so many tears in her passing, and yet we have also spent decades crying tears of joy and laughter with this exceptional human, so we are comforted by our memory of all those happy tears.
Faye, my beloved, you are gone from our daily lives, but you are the bedrock of our family, and we continue to feel your presence every day, in every way. It has been the privilege of a lifetime to walk through life with you by my side every step of the way. Your girls and I thank you for every magical moment we had you. Rest in peace, my darling”.
A Celebration of Life will be held on SATURDAY, AUGUST 17, 2024, at 1:00 PM (PDT), at the KAMLOOPS CURLING CLUB, 700 Victoria St, Kamloops, BC.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Days for Girls Canada, in honour of Faye.
