We are sad to announce the passing of our dad, John Gerald Nicolas Gnitt. Born October 25, 1940 in Flin Flon, Manitoba. Passed away January 6, 2024 in Kamloops, BC.
Dad was predeceased by his mother Anne, father John, sister Mary Kool, and grandson Austin Hammond. Left to cherish his memory, daughters Cori (Ian Patenaude), Wendy, Kim Govett (Clay), and Jessica. Grandsons Tyler Gnitt, Cole Cail, Dylan Cail, and Nathan Hammond.
Dad had a full and eventful life, including employment in the logging, mining, and pipeline industries, funding his education in law at the University of BC, graduating in 1967. He had countless stories of adventure and recklessness in his youth, and university days. He was an amazing storyteller – described by Austin and Nathan as “The Story Man”.
Dad spent some time as a prosecution lawyer, but eventually found his calling working criminal defense for over 40 years. He dedicated his professional life to working with individuals who looked to him for help and support in some of their most difficult times. Dad found great satisfaction in developing relationships, using his legal expertise to assist his clients. He was always grateful for the gifts God gave him, and never judged the struggles of others. He would literally give anyone the shirt off his back if he thought they needed it more than he did.
Dad was a humble and generous man. He prided himself on a simple life, despite his exceptional career. He appreciated the barter system and was happy to embrace it.
Our dad was an important part of our social circle and we will miss him terribly.
Anyone who would like to join us in remembering dad are welcome to attend his Memorial service on Friday, January 26 at 1:00 pm, Kamloops Alliance Church, 200 Leigh Rd., in the Ministry Center.
