David Victor Pitts passed away peacefully on December 31, 2023, surrounded by loved ones, at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice. He joins his beloved wife Joan who passed away 10 years prior.
He is also predeceased by his parents Peter and Olecia Pitts, and his father/mother-in-law Alex and Mary Gawdun, his brother-in-laws Wayne and Kelly Gawdun, and his niece Jenna Pitts.
Dave was born on August 8, 1948 in Roblin, Manitoba, the first born of Peter and Olecia Pitts. He grew up in Yorkton, Saskatchewan with his brother Pat and sister Donna. His early years were spent camping and fishing with his family and friends. He left home at the age of 17 to work up in the Yukon, and from there moved into various ventures creating memories he fondly spoke about later in life.
Dave was united in marriage to Joan Gawdun on April 24, 1971 and blessed with four children, Sean, Shanley, Renay, and Ryan. Dave was an entrepreneur and started Pitts Enterprises in the 1970s. The family lived in Roblin, Manitoba where they operated several businesses throughout the years, including a grocery store, restaurant, clothing store and a furniture store. He enjoyed spending time travelling with friends and family, hunting and fishing, and time at the cabin at Madge Lake. He always had a project on the go, either renovating or building at his house or cabin.
In 1990, he moved his family to Kamloops, B.C, and restarted Pitts Enterprises in the wholesale distribution business, where the company still operates today. Over the years, the family moved to various parts of the city, eventually building a home in the community.
Dave’s favourite activities living out west included boating at the Shuswap, fishing on the coast, hosting family dinners, cabin life at Nicola Lake and putting people to work, mainly his family. It did not matter what Dave was doing, he wanted to be surrounded by family, the more the better. Dave would find a purpose for each of those hands. It is with this help he would would slowly build the cabin at Nicola Lake. When he wasn’t working on the cabin, he could be found sitting on the deck overlooking the water reading a book or telling stories from his youth.
One thing for certain that can be said about Dave is that he was a character. On first impression, you might think he was this gruff and tough guy with strong opinions, but you would soon find that he had a huge heart, particularly with his grand-kids. He was always first to offer help, always up for a conversation and an open ear to unload to, but he was also not afraid to tell you what he thought, whether you wanted to hear it or not.
The values he instilled into his kids and now grandkids include: to always tell the truth, treat everyone fairly, work hard and honourably, do what you say and do whatever you can to help family when needed.
Dave is survived and mourned by his four children, Sean (Krista), Shanley (Rob), Renay (Tony), and Ryan (Meghan), and his cherished grandchildren Andrew, Kyle, Blair, Ryan, Tyler, Maya, Clark and Leon. He also leaves behind his brother Pat (Dawn) Pitts, his sister Donna (Andy) Churko, his brother-in-law Wilfred Gawdun, his sister-in-law Virginia Pickard, and his nephews and nieces, Glen, Jason, Troy, Tracy, Daniel, Andrea and Luke, as well as many other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dave’s memory may be made to the Vancouver Children’s Hospital. At his request, there will not be a service, but a private Celebration of Life at a later date.
