Evelyn Radford Obituary
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing on May 7th of Mum, Grandma, Great Grandma and Great Great Grandma, Evelyn Radford. She was born in Woking England August 24, 1926.
She came to Canada after meeting and marrying her first husband, Nels (Raymond) Johnson during WW2. She and their first child, Richard were part of the largest mass migration of women and children in Canadian history through the efforts of the Canadian Red Cross on their transatlantic journey. We can only imagine how a young mother of 20 must have felt embarking on such a journey to a new country to set up her new life. And when she talked about it – she always reflected on how great the women of the Red Cross were and the support she received during that journey. Mum always commented on how her new family in Canada received her and how welcoming and supportive they were. Together they went on to have three more children, Elizabeth, Susan and Judy. Tragically, Raymond was killed in an industrial accident leaving her as a single mother to raise four children.
She later married Harley “Buster “Radford. Together they had another child, Chris and continued to live in Greenwood. She worked as a BC Tel Operator in the early sixties. Through the years she was very active in the community and enjoyed her time with the tennis and badminton clubs. She also dedicated a lot of time to the historic St. Jude’s Anglican Church. She was an avid reader, enjoyed listening to music, playing canasta and having tea with her many friends. Hockey was on every Saturday night and she was a faithful follower of curling.
She and Buster moved to Penticton in 1997 where they made many new friends and enjoyed their time in the Red Wing community. The time came in 2015 when Mum was in the need of assisted living. She was forever grateful that an opportunity was found where she could settle comfortably into Mountain View in Golden. She greatly appreciated the personal care she received from all staff over her 9 years there.
Evelyn is survived by sons Rick and Chris (Rita) and Daughters Liz (Mark), Susan (Jim) and Judy (Michael) along with 11 Grandchildren, 13 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Raymond, second husband Buster, and daughter in law Iris.
She was without a doubt one of the strongest and most generous people that we have ever known and she will carry that distinction for the rest of our lives. Her humor and compassion will be missed by all who knew her. There will be no service as per her request.
Gone, but never forgotten.
