Obituary
Richard Norman Pretty passed away at 64, Tuesday, October 24th, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer. Rick and his wife, Shelley lived in Gibsons in Hopkins Landing.
Rick was born in Guelph, Ontario in 1959 and moved to North Bay in 1961 where his family owned and operated the Dolphin Motel. Winters were spent taking motel visitors out on Lake Nipissing for ice fishing trips, lots of snowmobiling and skating on the lake. Summers were filled with boating, fishing and swimming. Rick played hockey and baseball from a young age and was also a talented quarterback for his West Ferris High school football team. He also quarterbacked the North Bay Ti-Cats city team of the Northern Football Conference. After graduating in 1977 Rick and Shelley moved to Edmonton, Alberta where they married in 1979. Rick began working for the Brick Warehouse in Edmonton. He remained with them taking a transfer to Richmond, residing in Steveston, and then New Westminster until retirement in 2023 as the fleet manager for the province of B.C. (43 years of service). Rick coached both children’s ringette, hockey and lacrosse teams throughout their younger years and then carried on coaching hockey for Richmond Minor. He enjoyed playing and refereeing many different sports over the years; recreational hockey, broomball on skates at Seafair Arena, masters lacrosse league and curling.
He will be remembered as a wonderful father, husband, coach and grandfather (known as Baba to his 3 granddaughters). Rick is survived by his wife Shelley, daughter Dana (granddaughter Ella, 16yrs old), son Ramsey, (Ramsey’s wife Amy and granddaughters, Emilia – 2 yrs. & Lily – 1 month).
Rick lived life to the fullest, moving to his dream home on the Sunshine Coast and spending many days tending to his yard or working and playing in his shed with all his treasures. Those treasures are all part of his life with his family. If he could pass on any words of wisdom, they would be this –
‘Nothing in this world should be more important to you than your loved ones.’
