Janet Barge Obituary
We are saddened by the passing of our much beloved matriarch, Janet Barge on Monday, November 17 at the age of 84. Janet passed away peacefully at home under the loving care of her husband, Herb and daughter, Irene assisted by son-in law, Kevin. We would like to thank the Palliative Home Care Nursing Team for providing supervision and the medications to keep her comfortable.
Janet was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the daughter of John and Lilian Hayne. She attended Lord Selkirk Elementary School in Vancouver from September 1946 to June 1952. Then she attended Gladstone Junior Secondary High School from 1952 to graduation in 1958.
During high school, Janet also studied ballet and piano with the Royal Conservatory of Music. In 1956, she was accepted as Intermediate Performer V Pianoforte by the British Columbia Registered Music Teachers Association’s Student Performers Guild.
After graduating from Gladstone in 1958, she entered the Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating February 14, 1962. Janet spent most of her nursing career working in two care home facilities, Hawthorne Lodge in Port Coquitlam, BC and Cedars Villa in Calgary, AB until her retirement in 2009. Janet was extremely proud of her nursing career and spoke fondly of all the people she had worked with. She maintained friendships with many of her fellow nursing students and frequently attended their reunions.
She married Herbert Franklin Barge on September 1, 1962 and together they raised a family of three children: Lilian Irene born in 1964, Laurel Lea born in 1966 and John Ross born in 1968.
Janet enjoyed joining her husband Herb on their many adventures throughout their life together, including many camping trips, several which included packing their three young children in the camper/truck to travel across the continent. They took many trips on their own or with family to their favorite island of Kauai as well as various cruises including a trip to Greece which was her life long dream. With her husband, Herb, she also worked on four Scouts Canada National Jamborees and enjoyed volunteering her time to many Scouting activities throughout her life.
Janet could often be found working in her garden, identifying her many bird visitors or reading a good book. She loved to golf, hike, geocache, walk and care for her Lhasa Apsos and solve her daily crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting and fabricating Teddy Bears from old coats. In her later years, she enjoyed the art of Tai Chi.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Joel Pickell. She is survived by her husband Herb, two daughters Irene Pickell (Kevin) and Laurel Richards (Dave), one son John Barge (Stacey), six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations to Alzheimer Society of Canada.
A celebration of Life will be held in Alberta next spring.
