James Littlewood Obituary
Littlewood, James Stanley Barrie of Gibsons, B.C., passed away peacefully at Sechelt Hospital in the early morning hours of June 2nd, 2024 at the age of 91. Barrie was a very loving husband to Connie (predeceased in 2019) and is survived by daughter Lisa (Ines) and son Lance (Shanon)
Born and raised in Vancouver, B.C., he was the third of four brothers whom he cherished. As he grew up he had many interests including hunting and fishing in the Princeton area and also served in the military with the Irish Fusiliers throughout his twenties (1952-1959) and was a corporal bombardier and gunner for the 65th Anti-aircraft regiment.
During the 1960’s Barrie had an opportunity to learn agricultural engineering and farming through his stepfather, Fred, in southern Alberta around the Foremost area. After honing his farming skills for a number of years he felt a need to have a family and so he met his future wife Connie through an extraordinary set of circumstances. She was travelling across the country from Toronto by train to the west coast looking for adventure. They struck a chord with each other immediately and began writing a hundred letters to one another resulting in marriage and building a life together.
After a successful farming career, Barrie and family moved to Lethbridge, Alberta in the early 1980’s where he proceeded to work for the government in Indigenous Agricultural Affairs. Always having diverse interests he eventually moved on to various enterprises until finally spending his remaining years before retirement working for The City of Lethbridge in the transportation department.
Retirement called him back to British Columbia though, where he grew up and where he would spend his vacations boating and fishing throughout the province. Finally settling in Gibsons, Barrie and Connie would quickly become valued members of the community as each of them would continue to volunteer in the town in various capacities. Whether golfing or being on the water in his cabin cruiser, he made sure to make the best life he could for them both as the years passed.
In lieu of flowers, please remember him by donating to one of his favourite places, The Prancing Pony Community Thrift Shop. All proceeds go towards helping animals.
