Young-ja Joan Oh (주영자), 82, died peacefully on September 25, 2024. Her last moments were spent surrounded by family, accompanied by the gentle Korean songs that brought her much comfort.
She was born in Pakchon, Korea (박천군) on November 15, 1941, to Myun-Joo Choo (주면주) and Lee Sunwoo (선우리). She studied nursing at the prestigious Seoul National University Hospital (서울대학교병원) and after immigrating to Canada in June 1965, she started working as a nurse at Holy Family Hospital in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. A local doctor introduced her to a young lab technologist named Yonghwan (오용환) who was working at a nearby hospital, and on March 23, 1968, they were married.
One of her greatest loves was experiencing life through travel, and the couple slowly moved across the country, with stops in Thunder Bay, ON, Stratford, ON, London, ON and finally Vancouver, BC. She travelled across Europe, North America and East Asia, celebrating her love of food and culture despite her disinclination towards humidity.
She loved music and singing, watching shows and being a part of her church community. She also loved being her own boss, and her ventures included a pizza restaurant, two convenience stores and later acting as a business partner.
She will forever be remembered by her family; her husband and life-partner, Yonghwan; her daughter Tracey (Ian), her son Jeffrey (Sarah) and son Gregory (Courtney); her three grandchildren Emma, Marcus and Jones; her two sisters, Jung-ja Choo (주정자) and Young-Ae Choo (주영애); her extended family in Canada and Korea, and her friends all over the world. She was preceded in death by her brother, Yeo-Song Choo (주여송).
