Arline Wendy Orser, 86, of Castlegar, B.C., passed away peacefully and purposefully on March 13, 2024 with her loving son, Wylie, and daughter-in-law, Kim, at her side.
Arline was born August 25, 1937, to Harris Byron Robinson and Anne Robinson in Toronto, Ontario, younger sister to Joan. After travelling around Canada, including Nova Scotia and Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, the family moved west to central Saskatchewan, settling in Rose Valley where Arline attended school.
Arline was predeceased by her parents, her two sons Tim and Rob, her husband George, her sister Joan Bergermann. She is survived by her son, Wylie and his wife, Kim; his children, Clayton (children Shade and Rosie); Dane (wife, Becky and children Arlo, Emmett and Wylie); Kodie (and her partner, Karson and her daughter, Sage); Cassidy Passey (and her husband, Justin, and their children Honey, Ginger, and Daisy); Logan (and his partner, Taylor and his son, Braxton); Kim’s children, Lane and Jacey Bonertz.
Arline was a very talented young woman and worked as a helper to her father who was a “cat skinner” digging dugouts for whoever hired them and also cooking for ranch and construction crews. It was on one of these jobs on a ranch in the very south of the province, that Arline met the love of her life, George Orser, from Shaunavon. They eventually married after Arline worked in Saskatoon as a nanny for a short while, and began their married life at the Dixon Ranch.
They were blessed with three sons: first Timothy (Tim) and then Robbie (named after her dad). George got work at a neighbouring ranch owned by Walt Larson, and Wylie was born while they were working there.
Arline was a helper. You could rarely find her without her kids’ friends visiting at Larson’s when school was out, looking after her younger sister, Donna, volunteering at Val Marie community events, cooking for brandings, caring for her father when he was in care and more.
Tragedy struck their family when both Tim and Rob were killed in vehicle accidents about a year and a half apart.
They bought an acreage just outside of Val Marie in the 70s when the Larson Ranch was bought by Grasslands National Park and Arline drove school bus. She was very proud of “her kids” and got a thank-you plaque from them. In the 80s, they moved to an irrigated acreage outside Medicine Hat, Alberta, and Arline took her real estate exam and later worked at Western Canada Welding.
But, George missed the active ranch life and they hired on at the Palmer Ranch, living at the ranch and then buying a house in the nearby town of Hillspring, Alberta. Arline was a terrific cook and worked hard feeding the various ranch and farm crews at both the Larson and Palmer ranches. After retiring from Palmer’s, they bought a house in Pincher Creek where they lived for six years. George unfortunately passed away in 2010 and Arline soon moved to Rocky Mountain House then Castlegar, B.C., to be closer to her son and grandchildren. She took great pride in her son and his family.
She has been described as “tough as nails with a heart of gold” and she was certainly that but much more. Toward the end of her life, she exuded pure gratitude for her “wonderful life,” telling stories and catching up with old friends and basking in all the love from her family, faith and friends.
As she wished, she will be cremated and her ashes will be mixed with George’s and scattered at the Larson Ranch “where we were all together” at a later date. There will be no service, by request.
