Joyce Natalka Hooper of Abbotsford, BC, passed away on May 31, 2024, after a sudden decline in her health. She was 85.
Joyce was born on December 9, 1938, at Mission City Hospital to Steve and Sophia Mahyr. During her childhood she lived on multiple farms in both Agassiz and Chilliwack, along with her 4 siblings.
During her younger years she was married twice and, with her first husband, adopted her only daughter, Angelique Janine. However, the marriages did not last, and she met the love of her life, Norm Hooper, in 1990. They married in Honolulu, Hawaii, on December 29, 1992, and settled in the city of Richmond.
While Norm was running his business, Joyce would take care of her first grandchild Caitlynne while her daughter Angie was working as a Flight Attendant. Caitlynne was the light of her life and was adored by both of her grandparents.
During their marriage, they shared many interests such as boating, golfing, walks along the dyke and watching hockey. They cruised to many destinations such as the Caribbean and Alaska. It was also said that they “crashed” many weddings on Granville Island while staying on their boat on the weekends. Just a testament to their humor and love for life.
As they got older, they sold the boat and bought an RV where they spent a lot of their time during the summer parked at an RV park near the US border. This was their happy place up until the time Norm passed in 2016.
Joyce was predeceased by her husband Norm. She is survived by her daughter Angelique, her granddaughters Caitlynne, Jessica and Julia.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Bevan Village in Abbotsford for their kindness, compassion, and care during her short stay.
Joyce will be laid to rest at Little Mountain Cemetery along with her husband in a private family ceremony. ln lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the BC Heart Foundation.
