Wilfrid Ermantrout Obituary
Wilfrid (Wilf) John Ermantrout, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and brother passed away peacefully on June 26 at the age of 82. He was surrounded by his loving family in his final moments where they were able to watch his Oilers in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final.
Born on October 7, 1941 in Macklin, Saskatchewan Wilf lived a life filled with love, laughter, hard work, and a passion for sports. The eldest of seven children, Wilf spent his early years on a farm near Bodo, Alberta before moving to the eventual family homestead three kilometres southwest of Compeer, Alberta. It was on the small family farm that Wilf learned the importance of hard work, perseverance, and community. These values shaped his life and the lives of those around him. It was also in Compeer where Wilf’s love for all sports began and grew into a lifelong passion – particularly baseball where, from a very young age, he became known throughout the area for his talent, dedication, and sportsmanship. As a 13 year old teenager, he played on the senior men’s team that travelled to tournaments throughout eastern Alberta. His younger brother, Ken, recalls hearing “the young curly haired ball player from Compeer” whenever Wilf came to bat.
After graduating high school, Wilf moved to Stettler, AB where he introduced his best friend (and future brother-in-law) Murray Scott to his sister Millie. He worked at the local Macleod store before returning to school to get his steam ticket. He spent over 30 years as a gas plant operator at Nevis and Rimbey for British American Oil and Gulf Canada. In retirement, Wilf spent his winters in Phoenix and loved fishing, golfing, woodworking, watching sports, and spending time with his family.
Wilf is survived by his two children Paul (Teresa) and Karen Pritchard (Blair); four grandchildren Kayla (Francisco), Kelsie, Jordan (Victoria), and Kellyn (Makena); three great-grandchildren Blair, Boston and Beckham; and five brothers and sisters Mildred, Shirley, Ken, Dan, and Marcine. He is predeceased by his parents Mike and Caroline; youngest brother Michael; brothers-in-law Murray Scott and Bill Scott; nephew Warren Ermantrout; and his longtime companion Dena Amadore.
Wilf’s memory will forever remain in our hearts and his spirit will continue to inspire us. He will be remembered for his love of family and his enduring love for sports. He will be deeply missed by all who had the honour of knowing him. Rest in peace Wilf.
In accordance with Wilf’s wishes there will not be a formal funeral service. Instead, a gathering of family and friends will be held on a later date in September to celebrate his life. Details will be shared closer to the date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Alberta Cancer Society
