Rachel Rutz Obituary
It is with great sadness that Alana and Lori announce the passing of their mom, Rachel Rutz, on June 14, 2024. Rachel was born in Lacombe, AB, on November 23, 1945, to Fred and Ellene Rouse.
Rachel grew up in Alix, where she was active in dance and figure skating. Rachel married Allan Rutz in June of 1965 and shortly thereafter they moved to Bashaw. In 1967, their daughter Alana was born, and in 1970 Lori made their family complete. After years of sacrifice and devotion, Rachel became an elementary school teacher. She began her teaching career in Ponoka in 1973, and transferred to Bashaw the following year, where she taught for 32 years. Rachel was instrumental in starting the Bashaw Figure Skating Club and helped found the first Government Funded Kindergarten, that later became the Bashaw Early Learning Center. As well, Rachel spent countless hours driving her daughters to all of their sporting events. Rachel moved to Red Deer in 2015 after Allan’s passing. She loved attending the Alix ladies lunches, going out to dinner and movies and was a constant supporter of her grandchildren’s many sporting events. Rachel loved cheering for the Toronto Blue Jays, Edmonton Oilers and wouldn’t miss watching any curling games.
Rachel is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Alana and Shawn Wagar and her grandchildren Ty and Colby; her daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Mark Hameister and her grandchildren Brooke and Casson; her sister Mary Read (Lynn); brother-in-law Rod Rutz; sister-in-law Glenda Morrow (Clayton); and many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
We are so very thankful to the Red Deer Hospice’s excellent nurses and HCA staff and to Wombold Family Funeral Homes.
A celebration of Rachel’s life will be held at the Bashaw Community Center on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 1:00 p.m.
