Maxine Claybourne Obituary
Maxine Claybourne
1933 – 2024
Mary Alitha Maxine Claybourne, a woman of deep integrity and grace, left our world on Sunday, February 25, 2024 surrounded by many she loved at the age of 90.
Maxine was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on October 18, 1933, to Thomas and Margaret Claybourne. She was the first of nine children and, as a result, developed a sharp wit and a generous heart.
Maxine received her education as a teacher in the 1950’s and moved to Alberta to begin her career. Initially, she worked near Cardston with the people of the Blood tribes before moving to a long and much loved career in Ermineskin, Hobbema (now Maskwacîs). There she developed meaningful relationships with her students, as any good teacher does, and made many friends through her long career both in Ermineskin and Samson schools.
Always fiercely independent, Maxine would travel cross country to visit her siblings, nieces, and nephews in PEI every summer. She learned to fly a plane and obtained her pilot’s license. The love of horses ran deep in her family and Maxine attended races and even invested in a horse for her family.
Her final years were spent in Continuing Care, at the Wetaskiwin Hospital & Care Centre where she was able to make new friends and connect with some familiar faces. Maxine had deep roots in the community and made meaningful connections like that shared with Chris Kirwan and Jessica Johnson, who were devoted friends that cared for her like family.
Maxine is survived by her siblings, Sandra Bleile (George), Beverly MacIntyre, Jean-nee Bradley, Glenn Claybourne (Sharon), Philip Claybourne (Donna) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by siblings, Donny Claybourne (Marie), Marie Claybourne, Brooks ‘Buffer’ Claybourne (Nancy) as well as her parents.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Baker Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 with Father Garry LaBoucane, OMI, officiating.
If desired, donations to honour Maxine’s life can be made to the Wetaskiwin Health Foundation – Long Term Care Fund (6910 – 47 Street, Wetaskiwin, Alberta, T9A 3N3)
