Lloyd Birney Obituary
Ronald Lloyd Birney (Lloyd) passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on August 8, 2024 after a short illness. He was born September 14, 1934 to William and Hester Birney at their homestead near Alberta Beach, Alberta.
While attending Canadian Union College in Lacombe, Alberta, he was introduced to the love of his life by his two younger sisters and shortly after was married to Gayle Idel Hanson at McBride, BC on June 30, 1957. During their 67 happy years of marriage, Lloyd and Gayle welcomed four daughters.
Lloyd had an early love for strawberries, and as he rode on the wagon seat beside his father he would exclaim, “dare twawberries, dare twawberry”. This passion for strawberries continued as he realized his lifelong dream to grow strawberries as a business-–first The Berry Patch near Ponoka and later Birney’s Berries near Bashaw.
Along with his love for strawberries, he also had an inventive mind beginning when he was very young. Throughout their life together, Lloyd and Gayle dreamed and invented many devices and implements for their farming life. Their creations always started with the thought, “There must be an easier way!”
Lloyd loved to both work and play. With his characteristic penchant for mischief, he played many practical jokes on his unsuspecting wife and siblings. He would shovel off the ice to enjoy a game or two of pond hockey with his children and grandchildren. Of course the young ones never missed a chance to receive a horsey ride around the house or one of his famous bear hugs complete with sound effects.
Lloyd is predeceased by his parents Hester and William and his two sisters, Miriam and Pearl. He is survived by his brother Lester, his wife Gayle, their four daughters–Laurene (Glen), Ruthie (Jeff), Evie (Gordon), and Louella (Glen), twelve grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Together, we mourn his passing yet rejoice in the assurance of that glorious reunion through Jesus Christ.
Please join us in celebrating his life at the Ponoka SDA Church on Sunday, August 25th at 2:00 p.m.
