Leroy Dickau Obituary
Leroy Wilbert Dickau, born on January 2, 1932, in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, passed away on June 26, 2024, after a brief hospital stay for heart and kidney failure. He was the cherished only child of Bill and Freda Dickau.
Leroy is survived by his beloved wife Gladys, his children Brenda and Tim (Mary), and his grandchildren Steve (Lori), Matt (Cait), Mike (Jill), Candice (Damien), Leanne (Andrey), Thomas (Emily), Taylor (Leanne), and Mitchell, along with seventeen great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son Gerald, daughter Julene, son-in-law Neil, and grandchildren Nathan and Daryl.
Raised on a farm four miles west of Wetaskiwin, Leroy graduated as Valedictorian from Wetaskiwin High School in 1950. He attended Berean Bible College in Calgary, receiving a degree after three years. Initially considering a pastoral career, he chose instead to return to farming, furthering his education at SAIT with night classes to obtain an Agriculture Mechanics Certificate. Leroy became an innovative farmer, transitioning from mixed farming to operating a feed lot, and was the first in his area to erect cement silos for silage.
On November 13, 1954, he married Gladys Strohschein. Together, they built a loving family with children Gerald, Brenda, Julene, and Timothy. Leroy was diligent at farming but took time to pursue other interests. These included owning and operating Auction Acres and Dickau Feed Service Ltd., as well as serving as President of the Home and School Association, a shareholder and director of Alberta Engineering and Samesun Ventures Inc., and chairman of the Social Credit League of Wetaskiwin. He was also an active member of the Gideons and participated in numerous committees and boards.
Leroy’s dedication to his community was matched by his devotion to his faith, which he actively practiced at Calvary Baptist Church through various leadership roles, singing, and leading services. His passion for music extended to singing in a men’s quartet for many years.
Leroy and Gladys enjoyed numerous vacations, including Expo ’67 in Montreal and a memorable visit to Israel for their 25th anniversary in 1979. Before they sold the farm in 2003, he and Gladys enjoyed winters in Arizona with their fifth-wheel trailer. In 1974, he took the whole family to Europe for six memorable weeks.
Leroy stocked a pond on his farm with trout specifically for his grandchildren to fish in. He began polishing stones and rocks for jewelry, tables, and other projects. He also became a skilled craftsman, spending countless hours woodworking creating clocks, furniture, intarsia, picture frames, and countless other designs. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren loved completing projects with him in his workshop.
Leroy had a gift for conversation, making friends easily and showing genuine curiosity and interest in others. He was famous among his grandchildren for reading “The Growly Bear” – no one could shake their jowls and growl like Grandpa. He had the unique ability to make each grandchild feel like the favourite, always greeting them with a huge bear hug.
Faith was central to Leroy’s life, guiding him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who prayed daily for each person in his family. His godly example touched the lives of many, leaving a legacy of love, kindness, and faith.
Leroy’s absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him, but his memory will live on through the countless lives he impacted with his wisdom, generosity, and unwavering faith.
A memorial service will be held on August 31, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Wetaskiwin Alberta. Donations can be made to The Gideons International in memory of Leroy.
