Karen Maplethorpe Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce that Karen Eirlys Maplethorpe passed away, after a lengthy illness, in the early morning hours on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 in Edmonton.
Karen was the first child born to John and Thora Jones on April 9, 1947 in Ponoka, Alberta. She attended school from grades one through twelve in Ponoka and graduated in 1965. Following, she attended NAIT and in 1968, received an Xray technician diploma. Karen then entered into and enjoyed a long and rewarding career in the medical field and was employed by Ponoka General Hospital until her retirement. As a couple, Karen and Roy ventured into business and they owned and operated a car wash and flower shop in Ponoka. Eventually, they relocated to Wetaskiwin so that they could be closer to Roy’s employment.
Karen had many hobbies – crafting beautiful quilts and meticulously painted ceramics. She had every cookbook known to mankind and was a cuisine connoisseur; there was always a place at and a delicious meal awaiting one at her table, or a tin of homemade goodies to take home. She enjoyed golfing and was a beautiful and creative florist. Karen faced many health challenges in her latter years and she fought hard, never losing her dignity or humor. Those that know Karen will smile when they recall her quick wit, lightheartedness, unyielding dedication to lifelong friends, of which she had many, and love for family.
Karen will be lovingly remembered by her husband Roy, of fifty-five years; and her brothers Darryl and Dwight (Lorna) Jones. Karen and Roy did not have children of their own but her nieces and nephews: Amber, Jesse, and Adam Jones; Rhiannon Berke and her children Julian and Ava; Desmond Jones; and her grandniece, Vickie held a special place in her heart. Marty, one of the several pets that she and Roy cared for over the years, survives and will miss Karen as well.
Karen’s friends, former coworkers and family are invited to a Celebration of Life at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2024, at St. Mary’s Anglican Church. If so desired, memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
