Herman Stadel Obituary
Herman Paul Stadel passed away on the evening of June 17th, 2024 at the age of 81.
Herman was born in Ponoka Hospital on Aug. 13, 1942 to Gottlieb and Olga (nee Schultz) Stedel, German immigrants who came to the Bashaw area to create a farmstead and raise a family. The youngest of eight, Herman’s earliest years were spent under the watchful eye of his older sisters, with whom he shared a close bond. Starting school in a one-room schoolhouse, he would eventually complete all twelve grades, an uncommon occurrence for rural boys at that time.
After high school, he began his first job working for Taylor Pearson and Carson Warehouse as a stock boy but longed to join the Canadian Air Force, which he eventually did 1962. Originally stationed at Trenton, Ontario and subsequently transferred to Cold Lake, Alberta, he continued to serve there for 5 years making frequent trips to Edmonton to visit friends and family. During these visits, he met Jane Moonen, a nursing student and friend of one of his old roommates. The romance blossomed. Not wanting to be transferred from the area, he left the Canadian Air Forces and started a banking career with Canada Trust, which kept him in Edmonton with Jane. The couple married on Sept. 19th, 1964 and moved into their own house within a year. Son Mark was born on April 23rd, 1968, their daughter Carmen followed on Nov. 8th, 1970. Herman eventually moved the family to Calgary in 1979, taking a job with the district office of the TD Bank. A few years later, when they wanted to move him to Toronto, Herman decided to leave the banking world and remain in Calgary operating a series of small businesses until his retirement in 1998. This brought a return to country living for Herman and Jane, moving back to the Moonen homestead of Jane’s mother and father. Having successfully battled throat cancer, Herman was determined to enjoy his retirement with more travel through the US, and further afield to Mexico, Costa Rica and Australia, along with numerous cruises throughout the Caribbean. Herman and Jane celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Hawaii in September 2014 and followed that up with a river cruise down the Rhine with a stopover in Iceland on the way. Herman enjoyed a number of hobbies including cheering on his favourite hockey team (Edmonton Oilers), stamp collecting, sudoku/puzzle books and listening to music. He especially loved all things Elvis, and a highlight was seeing Elvis perform live in Las Vegas. In his twilight years, Herman enjoyed the company of others and delighted in the frequent visits of friends and family. He enjoyed feeding the many beautiful song birds that chose to call their farm home and took great care in looking after and providing a lap to snooze in for the cats that found themselves abandoned on the side of their road.
Herman is survived by his loving wife Jane, son Mark, daughter Carmen (Brad), 4 grandchildren (Chelsea Judith, Matthew, Kyle and Chelsea Grace), sister Lora, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Herman was laid to rest in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery.
Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer Society.
