Gem Fitch Obituary
Gem O’Brien was born on March 5, 1934 and passed away peacefully and quietly on August 11, 2024 in the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre. She is survived by her husband, Victor, of almost 66 years and their three children. Lana Franklin (Bobby) and their three children; Kristi; Shannon and her daughter Isla; Jarod (Carolyn) and their two children Liam and Maddie. Son Shaun (Jan) and their four children: Kaitlyn (Ross) and their two sons Aiden and Evan; Sarah (Austonn) Lazoff; Emily; and Jonathan (Carla). Son Vic Jr. (Holly) and Vic’s two daughters: Kayla (Charlie) Whitworth; and Olivia.
Music was Gem’s life and her passion. She received her music diploma from the University of Toronto—Solo Performer and Teacher in 1957. During her career she taught piano and organ. She taught at Burman University; Walla Walla University and Whitman College, both in Washington State; and Kingsway College in Oshawa Ontario. She was Minister for music in several churches including the Village SDA Church in College Place, WA; The Congregation Church in Walla Walla, WA; The College Park SDA Church in Oshawa, ON; and the Saint John’s Anglican Church in Whitby, ON.
Her musical accomplishments include recitalist, soloist with symphony, chamber concerts, composer and adjudicator.
