Edwin “Roy” Ostrom Obituary
Edwin (Roy) John Ostrom passed away at the Wetaskiwin Health Care Centre on July 12, 2024 at the age of 82. Roy is survived by his sisters, Lillian and Loreen (Richard); nephews, Lorne (Angie), Bryce (Marcelle), Martin, Tony (Nikki); niece Juanita (Jared); Duane’s spouse Tammy, and their extended families. Roy was predeceased by parents, John and Alma Ostrom; son-in-law, Gordon; nephews, Daryl (Corrie), Duane.
He was born on November 08, 1941 in Wetaskiwin and attended the one room Anthony Hill school followed by high school in Ponoka. Roy attended the Olds School of Agriculture focusing on an education that would assist him in bringing new technology and methods to the family farm. He farmed with his Dad and enjoyed herding cattle with his best friend, a border collie named Sport. He was a tireless worker with patience like no other, often spending hours rigging up some contraption to aide him in a task where a third hand was all that was needed, when he was alone on the farm. He was always happy to have a familiar face stop by for coffee or play a good game of crokinole or Chinese checkers of which he was a master of both. Roy was always willing to share a smile and laugh with little coaxing. His laugh was all or nothing. A full-on belly laugh that would infect those within earshot. One never went hungry at the farm – breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon coffee, then dinner. Each sitting was a time to catch up on the last few hours work and to plan for the next few hours, before meeting again to eat your fill. Roy always looked forward to the Ponoka Stampede and was able to attend the one last time just 2 weeks before his passing. It was always a highlight for him, he rarely missed one.
Roy will be laid to rest at a graveside service on Saturday July 20 at 1:00 at the Wetaskiwin Cemetery.
