Allan Koole Obituary
It is with great sadness and disbelief that we mourn the passing of Allan Roy Koole who passed away suddenly on May 27, 2024.
He was born on February 19, 1942 and grew up with his younger sister Kathy on a farm near Kipp, Alberta. He began his teaching career at Clive, Alberta, then moved to Lacombe where he taught primarily chemistry at the Lacombe Composite High School for thirty plus years. Later after he retired, he taught part time at Red Deer College.
Allan met his soulmate Bev McLean (a farm girl and teacher from Saskatchewan) on a prearranged blind date for a Christmas dance in Bashaw on December 8, 1967. Their love of dancing and zest for life fueled a two year courtship and they were married on December 20, 1969 in the Gaetz United Church in Red Deer. Allan and Bev held their wedding dance in the Lacombe Memorial Centre and hired the Simon’s Orchestra that were playing in Bashaw the night they met. They then left the frigid Alberta weather for a honeymoon cruise to the Bahamas. They bought a small house in Red Deer for $16,000 and lived there for a little over five years. Allan drove to Lacombe to teach and Bev enjoyed the privilege of staying home with Cameron, born in 1971 and Stephanie, born in 1973.
Allan and Bev shared many common interests which included a love for music and dancing, reading, gardening, camping, teaching and a special love for the outdoors. Their farm backgrounds and desire for country living continued to call them to the country and in 1974 they went searching for an acreage. They bought 5 acres with towering spruce trees near the small town of Morningside Alberta. They spent many happy years there with their children Cameron and Stephanie, their grandchildren and a menagerie of pets. They always planted a huge garden which they weeded and harvested together. Allan’s pet project was his strawberry patch.
Allan lived his life to the fullest holding positions on many boards and committees and enjoying hobbies such as reading, judo, computers, Boy Scouts, geography, astronomy and photography. He was a willing volunteer and was often recruited to photograph or video dancing competitions, football games and 4-H events. He took great pride in his organized collections of slides and photographs. In their early years of marriage, Allan bought a slide projector and he and Bev spent many evenings viewing slides of his adventures while he gave a detailed account of each and every slide.
He was fortunate to grow up with a dad who taught him the value and skills of repairing and maintaining his own farm equipment and vehicles. He passed that love and skill on to Cameron and Stephanie and was proud of their successes. Allan was the household “fixer” for both outside and inside, and he always had a small dish on his dresser of someone’s treasures waiting to be glued or repaired.
Shortly after his 82nd birthday celebration Allan was hospitalized firrst in Red Deer, then Lacombe with chest and heart complications. He was released on May 8th and spent three glorious weeks at home with Bev enjoying time together. He had home cooked food, a cozy place to read and relax and a new bed with remote controls. They played cards, board games and watched movies every evening and often during the day. Who knew the time would be so short?
Allan was a wonderful loving husband, great dad and a proud grandpa. He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife Bev of 54 years, his sister Kathy Koole, his son Cameron with partner Sandy Twa and her three daughters Abby, Victoria and Emily, his daughter Stephanie Ing and her spouse Mel, and his three grandchildren Julian Koole and Connor and Douglas Ing. Allan lived a great life, touched many, many lives and will be sadly missed.
There will be a memorial service at a later date.
