Walter Kubrak
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Walter Kubrak on Friday, May 3, 2024.
Walter is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife Shirley; children Catherine (Christopher), Christiana (Brent), Carmen, Lisa (Dean), and Walter-John (Kyra); grandchildren Megan, Daniel, Laura, Emily, Nicholas (Kierra) and Alexander, and great-granddaughter Alaina.
Walter was born to John and Helen Kubrak in Vegreville on October 17, 1930. He grew up in Vegreville and attended the University of Alberta, graduating with a teaching certificate in 1951. After teaching grades 1-8 in a single room classroom near the town of Manville for two years, he then changed careers and studied at the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1958 with a Bachelor of Architect. It was while studying architecture that he met his future wife, Shirley; they married in 1959 and settled in Edmonton, where they started their family.
Walter worked with Alberta Public Works as a designer of university buildings and a planner of college sites. He was a member of the University of Calgary planning board for twelve years and an advisor to the advanced education campus board. He was also a project manager for numerous buildings across the province. After retiring in 1987, Walter continued as a special planner and advisor to various boards. His love of architecture extended to building almost every house he lived in.
On April 29, 2024, Walter moved to the Agape Hospice and passed away four days later surrounded by love. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff of Agape Hospice for their compassion, wisdom and care devoted to Walter.
In honour of Walter, a Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue, Edmonton.
A private Celebration of Life with immediate family will be held at the Highlands Golf Course.
In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made to the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association or a health organization of your choice.
