Shirley passed away peacefully Nov. 9th, 2024, at the age of 96. She was born in Saskatoon and attended Sion School for Girls, the University of Saskatchewan, McGill University, and received her master’S degree from the University of Michigan. She taught Physical Education at the University of Manitoba, Tech and Bedford Road in Saskatoon. In 2019, she moved to Mundare, Alberta to be closer to her daughter. After marrying Peter Cameron, Shirley retired from teaching to raise her family. Always up for a challenge, they built their own house in Saskatoon and a cabin at Nesslin Lake.
In her spare time, Shirley enjoyed reading, making clothes for family members, and crafting items for charity, most recently towel aprons.
Shirley gave freely of her time being president of the YWCA, a Girl Guide leader, member of the ACW, and president of the Saskatchewan and Saskatoon Highland Dancing Associations.
Having highland danced as a child, Shirley passed on her love for the dance form to students and her children. Over the years, she enjoyed attending highland dance competitions with her son, daughter, and granddaughters. When her children, Mark and Tanyss, began highland dancing, she took it upon herself to learn how to knit highland dance socks and hand sew kilts. These skills lead her to making kilts and socks for hundreds of dancers and pipers across Canada and even into the USA. Her socks and kilts were worn proudly by dancers of all levels including numerous provincial, Canadian and even a few world champion highland dancers. Many of these items have been passed on from person to person and can still be seen at competitions. On occasion, she made kilts for Irish dancers, graduations, weddings and formal events.
In addition to dance, Shirley was a competitive fencer in her university days and an avid Curler in her adult years. So, it is no surprise she treasured time spent attending curling and figure skating events, across the country, with two friends from university. Following in her mom’s footsteps, she became a member and eventually PM of Regal Chapter #132 OES. Eastern Star activities were an important part of her life and through this involvement, she developed strong friendships that lasted her lifetime.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Hugh and Alice Ireland; husband Peter Cameron; sisters Edna Sigsworth and Margaret Wilson; and daughter-in-law Janet Cameron. Shirley is survived by her son, Mark Cameron; daughter Tanyss (Vince) Rogers; grandchildren Marika (Joel) Sherman, Alexander, Derek, Avery and Nathan Cameron, and Jillian (Thomas) Sturgeon, Colby and Zoe Rogers; great grandchildren Peter, Castilleja, and Clara Sherman, and Siobhan and Saoirse Sturgeon. The family would like to thank the staff at Mary Immaculate Care Centre in Mundare, Alberta, for their care over the past 5 years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
The Funeral will be held December 14th in Saskatoon.
